Christine; I'm just back from NY and picked up a most wonderful little guide book there. Its called "New York Holiday Guide, The Best Places to Eat, Drink, Shop and Celebrate" by Charles Suisman and Carol Molesworth (authors of Manhattan User's Guide). This 130 page mini-guide lists dates for everything holiday: tree lightings, music around town, Christmas concerts, places with special holiday celebrations, where and when to see the best trees, the best window displays, the best lights, what to do with children, Christmas shopping tips, ideas for festive dining out, etc etc. They give addresses and phone information where applicable. There is a website listed in the book (www.manhattanusersguide.com) and a phone for more info (212-645-8025). I don't work for the author's, but I do think this is a great little guide for anyone considering spending part of the holidays in NY. Hope it helps you.

Christine actually the Christmas decorations are already up in some of the card shops, with the holiday collectables.

But actually the decorations start to come out right after Halloween, and are in full bloom just before Thanksgiving, and of course the Holiday Shows are already up by then and the Holiday concerts start at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

The city looks more like a winter wonderland some years, last year I thought the trimmings were not as prevelent as in earlier years.

Get tickets to A Christmas Carol it is one of the best holiday shows and at Lincoln Center see Nutcracker Suite by the American Ballet Theatre.

Hope you have a wonderful trip.

tweedy

Actually, the major department stores put up their Christmas decorations and Christmas windows right after Thanksgiving and not a second before. I assume you're interested in these and not seeing wreaths in Hallmark shops. Street decorations are more like first week in December.
|
And the Christmas tree is Rockefeller Center isn't lit until the first week of December.

The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center is performed by the New York City Ballet, not ABT (George Balanchine is rolling in his grave right now). And it is truly the most glorious production around.
