I used to frequent the market when I lived in Chicago, and it's one of the highlights of the season for me. There is a mix of authentic items from Europe, some local handicrafts, as well as the cheap stuff. The food is more American-influenced Central European food than what you find on the continent.

We've gone a few times, but I haven't bought anything. I think they do have some nice things.
I've seen kindereggs there.
We've gone on the weekend and it has always been very crowded.
Weekdays might be just as bad because of the people who work in the loop.

It is as authentic as can be. Most of the vendors are from Germany/EU. Many of the food vendors have authentic fare too.
It is always crowded, but fun and puts me in a Christmas mood. I saw that they have two new outposts, Naperville and near Wrigley Field. The Gluhwein mugs are fun to collect! Enjoy.
