Chincoteague, Montawk--anybody been?
I am looking for a beautiful, peaceful place to spend a few POST-labor day days this summer. My husband is French, and I want to show him how beautiful the East coast is. We'll be based in DC and I need a place that's not too far to drive. I am thinking of Montawk and Chincoteague. We are looking for a place that is quiet and not a honky-tonk beach resort (like VA beach or Ocean City). Any advice? Thanks.
I own a condo in Cape May, NJ that I rent out through web site http:www.vrbo.com/vrbo/1245.htm. Cape May is a national historic landmark filled with restored victorian mansions. Its only a 2 1/2 hour drive from DC. Although Montawk is alot longer of a drive...I would highly recommend that also.
Chincoteague is awesome. We went there for weekends before we had kids, have probably stayed everywhere on the island, from basic to luxurious. There is a web site -- check it out. It is like a town that froze in 1962. You should go out fishing for a half day on the bay. The beach is an interesting drive through a wildlife refuge, you'll see birds, deer, wild ponies. The beach (assuming it will still be warm, and it usually is post labor day) is gorgeous, and will be quite empty. It is about a 3 hour drive from the DC area. Plus you can stop along the way to see some of Maryland's eastern shore. Roadside stands with produce, etc. Very Americana!

Lest I leave a wrong impression, we never have stopped -- we've rented cottages and our kids both had their first ocean experience there -- and again and again every year. They are 17 and 21, and last Labor Day requested that we all go back again for the weekend!

Hello Francesca. Cape May,New Jersey
would be an excellent place to unwind.
Many bed & breakfast places to stay.
Many great restaurants. Also when
you come up from D.C. you can take the
Cape May-Lewes Ferry from Lewes,Delaware
right to Cape May. They carry passenger cars and the boats are very modern
and convenient. The ride across Delaware
Bay will start to unwind you immediately!
