Chincoteague Island this August

Our family of 4 (mid-50s & 2 college kids) will be on vacation in Chincoteague Island this August.
We rented a house by Oyster Bay.
We are looking for any suggestions of things to do, besides going to the beach & biking?
Thanks

We rented a house on Chincoteague for a week several years ago - it was a lot of fun.

We took a boat cruise with Daisey's Island Cruises, which was lots of fun:

There's also some things to do on Assateague - we visited the lighthouse, did some light hiking (it was August when we went too and kind of hot), went kayaking, checked out the visitors center.

Other than that, I think we just went to the beach, hung out, wandered around. It was fun though. We had combined it with a trip to DC, where we were on our feet all day long sightseeing, walking, etc. Once we got to Chincoteague, we were happy to hang out.

I took my mom and daughter there last summer. We enjoyed the lighthouse, riding bikes between Chincoteague and Assateague, walked the beach and did an amazing sunset boat cruise . But what we really liked was tracking down all the Misty of Chincoteague book connections and looking for the wild horses. You can read a short write up of our time there with pictures at www.travelbythebookblog.wordpress.com.

Enjoyed!

Go to the Wallops Space visitor center.

If you don't mind a drive you can go out onto the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. There's a fishing pier and restaurant in the middle so you can turn around there. It's not cheap but it's an engineering marvel.

In the opposite direction is Ocean City, MD and the Salisbury area. If you're not seeing wild ponies on the beach at the Virginia end of Assateague, you'll see them on the MD end but it's a bit of a drive to get up there.

Thank you for all your input! Yes, we are looking forward to some down time at the beach!

We have been going to this Island for many years, beach is great, so unspoiled. Bring or rent bikes, nicest way to get around. Tidewater outfitters will deliver a kayak or SUP for the week to your rental, great for both.
Resturants all basically serve same food, try the food trucks, especially the taco stand.
