chincoteague and assoteague
Can you drive on Chincoteague and Assoteague Islands? near the beaches? From maps I have looked at it looks as if there is an access road onto each one but after that there are just bike trails or hiking trails.
Wow, those are real places! I did a search out of curiousity and found this site: chincoteaguechamber.com. They seem to have a lot of information there.

Good luck!

You can drive in Chincoteague, although the island is so small you may enjoy walking everywhere instead.

Eric, didn't you ever read the book "Misty of Chincoteague"?

Absolutely loved "Misty of Chincoteague" as a kid. Read many times over!

Fran, Chincoteague is a town. You can drive all over just as you would in any community. Assateage, on the other hand, is a refuge, connected to Chincoteague by a short bridge. You can drive through select areas of the refuge - I believe that one road is closed to traffic after a certain hour. I prefer to bike ride here though - lovely ride, lots of wildlife.

We went to the north shore of Assoteague and drove down and stayed in the town of Chincoteague. The north shore was beautiful, ate at the Assoteague Crab House (good) and enjoyed the walk on the island. It was a foggy day and the horses came down to play on the beach. Chincoteague is charming.
