Chinatown NYC late at night

Hello all. I am looking at booking a hotel in Chinatown but I won't be returning to my hotel until fairly late at night. I want to be sure that I will be safe (woman with teenaged daughter) walking to the hotel from the Grand Street subway station. I am looking at Chinatown because I am taking a Chinatown bus the next day. Thanks for any thoughts.

What do you mean fairly late at night? 11 after the theater - of course you will be safe. Three in the morning - I would take a cab to most hotels in NYC - just because subways and buses don;t run that often.

Separately - highly reco that you do NOT take a Chinatown bus. They have a horrific safety record, with drivers that are not licensed, driving way too many hours, speeding and having numerous accidents, some with deaths.

Instead taking Mega or Bolt bus - which are also very cheap but much more reliable.

Finally - taking a bus in one area is no reason to book a hotel there.

You should have no worries about walking in the area, even quite late at night. Nearby streets stay quite busy at all hours, in my experience.

Take a real bus, the Chinatown buses are bad.

There will be scores of people in the main section of Chinatown since there are a number of 24 hour places, but some blocks around the Grand Street station can be a little deolate after midnight but not unsafe.

If you're worried about safety, a Chinatown bus is a terrible idea. Bad drivers, buses that aren't always well maintained. Boltbus.com, megabus.com worldwidebus.com or even Greyhound are better options and leave from more convenient locations.

Chinatown is fine as a place to stay but many places there do close early (although a few are open 24/7)
