Cheers Melissa. I've not been back for a while so just spotted your reply. I'm gradually building up an itinerary so hopefully I can add this one. Thanks again. K

The 2007 Fodor's Hawaii guide does warn people that Chinatown is not totally safe. Particularly after dark.

kid, one of our favorite times on Oahu was when we did a Chinatown tour with pakeporkchop. He is so very interesting. Hope you are able to hook up with him.

Aloha,
Keep in mind that February 18th is Chinese New Year (Kung Hee Fat Choy!), so for all of you who plan on being in Chinatown during this time it will be very busy, but a great time to visit! There are alot of art studio/gallary's now as well as the "Old" china town and it is a fairly safe place. I think what your friend may be thinking of is that late into the night is when most of the street walkers come out to do their business, but their is a new police station located right in the heart of Chinatown and they keep a pretty close eye on what's going on so it is much safer now. The celebration with the Chinese organizations will take place during the two weekends prior. On Sunday, February 18, we'll have a lion dance at Aloha Tower Marketplace (just outside of Chinatown) starting at 11 a.m. This lion dance is special as they will be doing an acrobatic dance using poles/raised platforms.
