Chicago-Unique Cuisine, Good Atmosphere?
Husband and I are adventurous diners but also like a trendy or unique atmosphere -- possibly with a good bar if we have to wait. Our only dislike is sushi --have been to Tizzi Melloul but would like some other suggestions while we are staying at the W Lakeshore. Cab rides are fine....just not too long!

How about Armenian by way of California? Last time I was in Chicago, I was taken to NAHA, 500 North Clark Street. It was a business occasion, but it sure wowed the customers (and me from out of town!)

Topolobampo is supposed to be terrific--inventive, high-end Mexican cuisine by Rick Bayless. The bar area is lots of fun, the atmosphere is very cool, and it's always crowded and bustling (reservations are recommended). Check out metromix.com for reviews.
There are some good, upscale and hip places on West Randolph, too--Sol y Mar for Cuban, Le Marche for French, Red Light for Asian. |
Opera: great Chinese food in a wonderful setting. We loved the sweet and sour pork (actually a whole pork chop) and the duck (three different preparations on one plate).
Japonais: the hot spot even if you do not eat sushi. Trendy and gorgeous. |
Tango Sur is a great restaurant in a very cool neighborhood, but be warned--the menu is pretty much centered on meat, and lots of it! Perfect for all you carb-counters out there. :)

Rick's Cafe, at 3915 Sheridan, in my opinion has very mediocre food--just a small neighborhood cafe with nothing special to recommend it.
Arun's is a destination Thai restaurant with a very special chef's tasting menu--like no other Thai place I know of. Another current favorite is Cafe 28, on Irving near Damen, with nouvelle Mexican and Cuban. |
For good Greek food and wine and a fun atmosphere with flaming cheese and noise try the Parthenon on S. Halsted. Also for just hamburgers and insults try Ed Debrevics (sp?) a 50/60's diner where you will be told to "hurry up, you're not the only customer I have"! :-)

Cafe 28 is one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Chicago!
