Chicago Tours from O'Hare Airport?

We are flying into O'Hare in mid December from the UK en-route to Florida and have several hours to wait for a connection in Chicago. Is there a city tour which I can take from the Airport? How long is it? How much? And how do we find it? Very many thanks.

Joe, if by several hours you mean about 3, I wouldn't leave the airport. To get anywhere downtown, even in the best of traffic, you'd need at least 45 minutes each way. Toss in the amount of time that it usually takes to clear customs and the possibility of a weather related delay and you won't have anytime for anything. I also have never seen any tours leaving from O'Hare.

If you had more like 6 hours, you could catch the el (subway) from O'Hare and have a little time to see the city.

Joe, one of the nice things about flying into Chicago from the east coast is that you will fly pretty much right over downtown Chicago. If you get a map of the city, you can probably pick out some of the buildings, like the Sears Town, the Hancock Building, Michigan Ave, the Ba'hi Temple, Northwestern.

Have a fun trip.

By all means, the subway (tube) would be the way to travel, should you decide to leave the airport. The highway into the city can become a total parking lot, and is much too risky to consider - unless you have many, many hours. But bear in mind that even the subway can encounter some stalls...and picture yourself sitting still in a dark tunnel, for no explained reason, watching the seconds tick off on your watch as the time of your connecting flight ticks down...

If you do decide you have enough time, the subway will cost you $1.25 (I think, unless there's been a recent fare increase). The ride into the Chicago Loop will take about 45 minutes. You'll want to get off at Washington Street - you'll be underground at Dearborn, and one block from State Street, and Marshall Fields, one of the city's (and country's) fabled shopping emporiums. Good luck to you!

If you have less than 6 hours, skip trying to get into the city. A cab/shuttle would be 2 hours roundtrip. An "el" train is a long hike from the international terminal, plus it is 45 minutes (minimum) each way for the ride.

If, however, you have enough time, Chicago is absolutely gorgeous in mid-December with thousands of Christmas lights and decorations. Please email me if you will have the time to visit us ... we're a very friendly, fun city. Please send any comments/questions to my email address.

Have fun!

Thanks to everyone who replied. Looks like we will be enjoying the delights of the airport that afternoon, after all!
