Chicago to Mackinaw Island MI
 

Trying to get from Chicago to Mackinaw - we don't have a car, want to stay 4 nights, anyone have suggestions for most efficient way to get there from here!

Of course you don't need and in fact can't have a a car on the island.
There is commercial air to Sault Ste. Marie or Pellston, MI. Then some sort of bus service to Mackinaw City or St. Ignace for the ferry.

Looks like flying to Pellston and then taking this shuttle:

But flights aren't cheap. You might just want to consider renting a car.

@kelliebellie - Thanks! And yeah I checked on flights - NOT cheap - and we're on a budget. So I think it will be car rental and driving all the way, altho we really wanted to do the SS Badger - next time I guess ;-)

It is a very nice drive. Assuming the map in my head is right, you should definitely stop at Sleeping Bear Dunes.
