Chicago Restaurant with River View

Does anyone know the name and if the food is good of the restaurant that sits beside the Chicago River? We noticed one on a boat tour and commented we would like to eat there because of the view but cannot remember the name.

tjd Oct 7th, 2003 01:53 PM

There are several. Just looking out of my window now, I see Sorriso (Italian, not very good food) and Smith & Wollensky (chain steakhouse). Do you remember where on the river it was?

mjks Oct 7th, 2003 02:02 PM

Could the restaurant be RIVERS ?

cd Oct 7th, 2003 02:05 PM

Seens to me it was not far from Michigan, but again, I could be wrong. It seems it might of been Chinese, Thai, ? and it might have green paint on a portion of it.

cd Oct 7th, 2003 02:17 PM

I just went to "Rivers" website and I bet that is it. I wonder how the view will be after dark. Is the river lighted?

tjd Oct 7th, 2003 02:18 PM

You may be thinking of Bob Chinn's Crabhouse Chicago. It is on the river at LaSalle

cd Oct 7th, 2003 02:40 PM

Actually that could be it too. I went to their website and their entrees are $30-50 That's a little to steep.

Kristi Oct 8th, 2003 05:51 AM

Lunch is cheaper than dinner at Bob Chinn's. The dinner prices are too much for me so I always go at lunch.

dweebe Oct 8th, 2003 05:53 AM

Bob Chinn's is nice; but dinner for two with drink and tips ran me about $130.

cd Oct 8th, 2003 06:32 AM

Yes, dinner is out. Kristi, what are the lunch prices?

Kristi Oct 8th, 2003 06:49 AM

I don't typically drink at lunch and I eat less, I've had meals for around $15-$20, depends on what you order. I usually go in soft shell season, the pepper calamari is also good.

I can't get the Chicago website to come up but I imagine that the Wheeling menu is now comparable (they had a different menu for awhile)but I think it was quite similar the last time I went

Thanks Kristi

Why would you want a view of the river. its a filthy mess. Sometimes you can see usewd condoms float by. Pick a rest on Mich in a high rsie with a view

cd Oct 8th, 2003 01:51 PM

Mrt:
Any suggestions for dinner with a lake view other than Signature?

Kristi Oct 8th, 2003 05:43 PM

Cd, the Chicago River really isn't that bad, I wouldn't want to go for a swim in it but I pass over it all the time and have yet to see a used condom or dead body float by. You've obviously been on it so judge for yourself.

The view of Lake Michigan is nicer, the other restaurant that comes to mind is Everest which is supposed to have the nicest view of the lake but that's a rather expensive place. Riva at Navy Pier and Spiaggia (also high priced) also get mentioned for their views.

Another suggestion might be to go the the lounge at the Hancock for a drink and then find another spot for dining.

Kristi
We (2couples) are coming into the city Dec 6 to see the lights, walk Michigan and have a not too high priced dinner. We have been on Navy Pier many times and I cannot place "Riva" The only nice restaurant I can think of is the one in the Atrium. What is Riva near? Thank you.

Kristi Oct 9th, 2003 05:40 AM

Here's a link to the map of Navy Pier, it's about midway on the pier but past most of the attractions on the side where you see all the dinner cruises.

I have not eaten at Riva, the reviews on Metromix are mixed (as they are for most restaurants even the top notch ones). I sometimes wonder if competitors go out and trash the competition on those dining boards as the reviews vary so widely.

If you're a frequent visitor to Chicago, you might think about picking up a copy of Chicago Magazine. There's a big dining section in the back which has recently been expanded to include local favorites such as Carson's, Heaven on Seven, etc.

And Metromix also has reviews, look for the ones with the Chicago Tribune review for a little more subjective review.

Thanks again Kristi

Kal Oct 9th, 2003 07:33 AM

Alooohaaa,
We always try and hit Riva's when we're back there whether for a few beers/oysters or dinner, especially on a clear night. A bit on the medium-high side $$$ but it's always been worth it IMHO.
We were there one night when the "Water Air Show" or whatever the name is, was in town and the Blue Angeles/T'birds flew by low, past Riva's and then turned straight up into a stall.
WOW!

Does The W near Lakeshore have a roof top bar/restaurant?
Kal

Kristi Oct 9th, 2003 08:14 AM

The W Lakeshore has the Whiskey Sky Bar which is also supposed to have a nice view of the lake. It's Rande Gerber's bar (aka Mr. Cindy Crawford) so I imagine it is full of beautiful people.

Maybe someone who's been there can tell you if it's one of those places where you have to be chosen to go in. I hear drinks are expensive.

marilynl Oct 9th, 2003 08:36 AM

Everest does indeed have a nice view, but it's west out over the city. You can't see the lake from there, but the sprawl of the city with all its lights does look very pretty from the 40th floor.

Kristi Oct 10th, 2003 05:48 AM

Marilyn, of course, is right about the view from Everest. If I had read the description a little more carefully.....
I've always read that it has one of the nicest views in Chicago and just assumed it was of the lake. It's a little more expensive of a restaurant than I typically frequent.

BTW, cd, if you have any interest in seeing the Lion King while here, a new batch of tickets for 11/25/03-1/4/04 is going on sale today at 10 am and will likely be snapped up pretty quickly.

You can buy them on www.ticketmaster.com

cd Oct 10th, 2003 06:34 AM

Kristi
We were there in July to see Lion King. Took our children and grandchildren. The opening is awesome! Thanks Kal for the review of Riva and Marilyn I would love to have dinner at Everest for the view and the food as I hear it is really good but the high prices keep me from it. :-)

alex Oct 10th, 2003 06:53 AM

Although the price has gone up to, I think, $49/person (it used to be about $35), Everest does offer a 3 course pre-theater dinner at 5:30. While still expensive, it does offer a good value at this excellent restaurant. Plus, for now at least until the sun starts setting earlier, the western view will be great for sunset.

Kal Oct 10th, 2003 07:10 AM

Alooohaaa and Happy Friday,
cd, no problem. Chicago has to be one of our favorite cities.

kristi,I guess that explains why Mrs Kal and I got into The W's bar?
No wait...they let us use the cool bathrooms and then leave. #-O

cd Oct 10th, 2003 07:30 AM

Kal
Are you vacationing in Hawaii or do you live there?

Kal Oct 10th, 2003 07:46 AM

cd-We "vacation" in No Calif. for around 49 weeks and then "live" on Kauai for around 3. ;)
We just love the Kauaian spirit.

Anytime "life" get's too hectic here, I look at the pic taped to my monitor and the BP drops 20pts...and then I look at the pic of Mrs Kal and it goes UP 20 so it all kind of evens out.

cd Oct 10th, 2003 07:57 AM

Kal - LOL! Have a great time!

cd Oct 10th, 2003 08:05 AM

Alex
Thanks for the early dinner price at Everest. Maybe for a special occasion we'll splurge.

Kal Oct 10th, 2003 08:50 AM

cd, We always do.
We're cursed that way. :-X
Not only am I thinking about Kauai, you have me thinking about a big ol' oyster platter and a few beers at Riva's while watching the world pass us by.
We'll compromise and go to New Orleans to hold us over till Kauai and then Chicago.
I hate when work gets in the way of a good life. ;)
Kal

cd Oct 10th, 2003 09:05 AM

We'll be in New Orleans after Thanksgiving for a few days. Decided on a balcony room overlooking Boubon Street in order have a drink while watching all the crazies. Probably will have to watch, it'll be too noisy to sleep.
