Chicago: Morton's, Gibson's, or Gene and Georgetti's?
If taking a 30 something male business associate for steak and drinks -- which of the three would you suggest. Probably not Morton's just because he's been to them elsewhere (even if this is the original). Which of the other two is "better" would you say?

hmmm. That reminds me ksucat of Chicago Chop House which some say is the best. And it is only about a block from our hotel -- how easy is that in the horrible weather? Anyone want to compare it to Gibsons -- or Gene and Georgetti's?

Haven't been to the Chicago Chop House but years ago we were regulars at Gene and Georgetti's. I have friends who still claim its the best, but judgements like that are based on being known in the place. It's been around for 60 years. It reminds me of PJ Clark's in New York.
A friend of mine who owns multiple restaurants swears by Gibson's. Too cold to do anything today so I've looked in on Fodors for the first time in maybe a year. TTFN. Honoria Glossop |
Gibson's last night was fantastic. What a zoo, though, even trying to get a drink at the bar while waiting for our table.
Really a great night, although I have to agree with those on some sites that say it is a little rushed. Things sure come out fast, although we didn't feel rushed to finish and leave. |
what did you have NeoPatrick?
Glad you enjoyed Gibson's! |
Too many drinks, I had a NY Strip, friend had a huge filet, and we had a big dish of broccoli and spinach sauteed with garlic. That's it. Period. Didn't even touch the huge basket of bread. The steak was a month's worth of red meat for me!

Book marking for our Chicago trip... anyone have a comparison b/w Gibson's and Gene and Georgetti's???? I've been to David Burke's Prime and was impressed, but want to change it up this time. NeoPatrick, I'm so glad you reported back! If I don't hear otherwise, I'll book us at Gibson's.
|
Hmmm. Since this thread I've been back to Gibson's again. Still impressed. But overall, I think I still like Morton's even better. The one thing about Gibson's is that when you finally get seated, it seems they really rush you. And I couldn't believe how quickly the food came out. If you want to linger a while, you need to put off ordering for awhile.
|
I wonder how early we'd have to get there to get seats at the bar? My husband and I usually prefer to eat at the bar- even in the nicest of restaurants- I don't think they take reservations there, so any thoughts on what time we would have to arrive for that??? Maybe then they wouldn't rush us if we have cocktails interspersed with our orders. Thanks for the heads up though- we'll definitely take our time b/w appetizer and entree orders if we do get a regular table.
|
Oh, and I meant reservations for bar seats, not in the dining room. Some restaurants take bar seats reservations, but those can be rare and are usually reserved for regulars... Thanks!
|
Even if they do take bar seat reservations, I wouldn't want to attempt to eat there. As the OP said, the bar scene was an absolute zoo the Tuesday night I ate there. Think Tokyo subway train during rush hour.
|
I recall seeing a few people eating at the bar, but with a crowd hanging over your shoulders and reaching between you to get drinks, doesn't sound very great. There are a few tall small tables and stools in the bar too, which would be a better bet if you can snag one.

Honoria Glossup???
LOL!! How is ole 'Bertie' doing? :) |
Gibson's owns another restaurant called LuxBar:
http://www.luxbar.com/ Really great atmosphere and a more laid-back feel. If you get a steak there, you're getting a Gibson steak. |
Gibson's is my favorite steakhouse in the world. Bern's in Tampa is close, but it comes in second. Morton's is somewhere around #5 on the list. JMHO :-D
|
Gibson's (to quote the recent contest winner) "is the obvious choice"...however, I do not understand the complaint about "being rushed."
If you aren't ready to order, you say so. And I guess it is better if the food comes out "right away" than sitting around wondering why the service is slow. |
I am partial to the Chop House & I have literally (by choice) spent hours lingering over a meal there, more than once.
