Chicago - King Tut - Funky Tut

Will be there one week from tomorrow and I can't get this stupid song out of my head!

"He coulda won a Grammy
Buried in his Jammies
Born in Arizona
Moved to Babylonia
He was born in Arizona
Got a condo made of stone-a
King Tut"

Please please post a trip report - I'll be in Chicago for the 1st time from 8/25 to 8/30 and am dying to see this exhibit!

chasechow Aug 4th, 2006 05:58 PM

Will do - just bought my tickets. One thing I did just find out is that you will want to plan your times and purchase your tickets online as soon as possible. The times sell out. The only thing we could get was 5:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. Let me know if you need the website.

Just spend one night at the Drake and 3 at the Four seasons. The Drake had a package deal with 2 Tut tix. I really, really wanted to go but didn't have time. If you can book the Drake, you can get the special with 2 tix that allow you anytime access except for 11-1:30 on weekends.

LOL!! I am ashamed to admit this, but back in the day I bought Steve Martin's album with this song. I can still sing every word. Here's an excerpt from another verse:

((8)) Buried with a donkey ((8))
((8)) He's my favorite honky ((8))

((8)) Gave his life for tourism ((8))

Thanks for a great laugh!!

:-))

LOL - P M - I FORGOT that part. I can see it now, I'm going to get thrown out of the joint!

kswl Aug 4th, 2006 06:30 PM

I loved that song! Didn't Steve Martin sing it? And the condo part was spoken, in a very low range?

P_M Aug 4th, 2006 06:32 PM

Yes, he sang it while doing a silly Egyptian dance, and dressed as King Tut. It was a hoot!!

kswl Aug 4th, 2006 06:49 PM

I remember the headdress! :D

Saw him once come out on stage carrying a metal something. No one could tell what it was. He held it up, displaying it proudly. Everyone strained to see it. He walked to and fro on the stage. Then he announced, "I got this for five bucks!" It brought the house down.

And you have to love the arrow through the head. Steve Martin is a nut!

Now when he was a young man,
He'd never thought he'd see,
People stand in line,
To see the boy king.
How'd you get so funky?
They said you do the monkey.
Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia, King Tut

Let's have a Fodor's sing-a-long. I'll copy and paste all of the words from a web page. On the count of 3, let's sing in unison. Ready? 1, 2, 3:

Now when he was a young man he never thought he'd see (King Tut)
People stand in line to see the boy king (King Tut)
How'd you get so funky (funky Tut)
Then you'd do the monkey
(Born in Arizona moved to Babylonia King Tut)
Now if I'd known the line would form to see him (King Tut)
I'd take up all my money and buy me a museum (King Tut)
Buried with a donkey (funky Tut)
He's my favorite honky
(Born in Arizona moved to Babylonia King Tut)
Dancing by the Nile
Ladies loved the style (waltzing Tut)
Rocking for a mile (walking Tut)
He ate a crockodile
He gave his life for tourism
Golden idol
He's an Egyptian!
They're selling you
Now when I die now don't think I'm a nut
Don't want no fancy funeral just one like old King Tut (King Tut)
He coulda won a grammy (King Tut)
Buried in his jammies
(Born in Arizona moved to Babylonia
Born in Arizona got a condo made of stone-a (sic) King Tut)

That was great, you all sang so beautifully!! I will now give you a sitting ovation.

Okay, here it is:

King Tut (King Tut)
Now when he was a young man,
He never thought he’d see
People stand in line to see the boy king.

(King Tut) How’d you get so funky?
(funky Tut) Did you do the monkey?
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut).

(king Tut) Now, if I’d known
they’d line up just to see you,
I’d trade in all my money
And bought me a museum. (king Tut)

Buried with a donkey (funky Tut)
He’s my favorite honkey!
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut)

Dancin’ by the Nile, (Disco Tut)
The ladies love his style, (waltzing Tut)
Rockin’ for a mile (rockin’ Tut)
He ate a crocodile.

He gave his life for tourism.
Golden idol!
He’s an Egyptian
They’re sellin’ you.

Now, when I die,
don’t think I’m a nut,
don’t want no fancy funeral,
Just one like ole king Tut. (king Tut)

He coulda won a Grammy,
Buried in his Jammies,
Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia,
He was born in Arizona, lived in a condo made of stone-a,
King Tut!

for a bit of melody...

chasechow Aug 4th, 2006 07:06 PM

PM - Looks like we've got that "Great Minds" thing going on.

P_M Aug 4th, 2006 07:09 PM

Does this mean we have to sing it twice?

chasechow Aug 4th, 2006 07:11 PM

Trust me, there's a reason they didn't get ME to sing it the first time!

kswl Aug 4th, 2006 07:15 PM

He gave his life for tourism! ROTFL!

P_M Aug 4th, 2006 07:22 PM

Only a Fodorite could relate to giving one's life for tourism.

Of course, I want it to be someone other than me. :-D

chasechow Aug 4th, 2006 07:25 PM

I gotta couple of fodorite suggestions for human sacrifice!

Did I say that in my "Out Loud" voice?

kswl Aug 4th, 2006 07:51 PM

Giving one's life for tourism could be interpreted as devoting it to tourism. I'll volunteer for that :D (but not the human sacrifice, sorry Chasechow !)
