Chicago in August?
I have already done a search for this but surprisingly I did not see an answer. Husband and I live in D.C. area, and have 4 days to go somewhere alone the first week of August. Thinking about Chicago, but is the weather decent, not sweltering? We are passing on NY due to the heat. If it is too hot in Chicago, we may just head to the mountains in West Virginia to get some cool, and that would be ok but not as much fun as Chicago. On the downside, I understand from the posts that Chicago is pretty crowded in August, but on the upside there seems to be alot that goes on around the lakefront and parks then.

The great thing about Chicago is that it could be good, decent or horrible weather! This gives us our carefree "drop everything" attitude when good weather does come around. So, the answer to your question is - nobody knows! But I always try to get out of town that week.
Highs will be in the 80's or 90's. The humidity will determine if it's bearable or not. If you are from DC, you may scoff at our paltry version of high humidity, but it does make strong men in wedding tuxedoes faint. How about Toronto or Montreal?

Have you been to the mountains in West Virginia in August? We have a mountain house in western Virginia in the Shenandoahs and it is awful in the summer, very hot and very humid. I'm curious to hear if it's any cooler in West Virginia.
Cashiers, NC is very nice and cool in the summer, even in August -- of course there's not nearly as much to do there as there is in Chicago.

OK, thanks everyone. I think based on your help, I will scratch Chicago and go to the mountains. I have heard that West VA mountains (near Canaan Valley) are cool and dry in summer, but i have never been and Tandoori Girls' comments about VA mountains are giving me concern. I don't think we want to drive to NC mountains for just a few days- it's a longer drive. I'll search and post to see what people who have been to W VA in late summer have to say.
Thanks again.
