Chicago hotel questions
Two friends and I have tickets to Chicago for May 16-19. Unfortunately our visit coincides with the 74,000 strong restaurant convention....meaning hotel rooms are very costly for us ordinary folks. I have received a suggestion that we consider a nearby town. Any suggestions?
Thank you. |
Are you driving or flying? Are you attending a show downtown?
|
We are flying. The performance is downtown.

O'Hare airport is near Rosemont so you may want to check lodging in the vicinity, though I don't think there are any bargains there either.
If you are going to rent a car then you can try Schaumburg which is about 10 miles west of Ohare or Oak Brook/ Elmhurst which is 10 miles south. The Restaurant show is one of the biggies in town usually fills up all downtown hotels as well as taking over many downtown reataurants. Chefs like to eat too. |
Staying in Rosemont would not be fun if you want to hang out downtown. That would be an hour commute each way.
Okay cmc, this is the deal. You are going to book a hotel through the NRA website. https://www.ttgcompass.com/compass/e...1066902862432B |
Ah, GoT, I looked at the site last night and wanted to take advantage of those great rates but the caution about how they audit everyone who uses the site to book to be sure they are registered for the convention made me concerned. So I took chicagolori's advice and rented a vrbo for $300 a night (2 BDRM condo near the Peninsula)

Thanks for the suggestion, joethekay. I was a little concerned about being too far from the theatres etc. The place I rented looks pretty convenient.
|
cmc, if you want to register, you can go under our regisration numbers. Email me at Blue Herons at hotmail dot com.

Wow, GoT, now that is really generous and kind! I do appreciate it.

Absolutely stay downtown. You're doing the right thing. I "go" downtown for the day at times, rare times. But when I do go for a play or whatever, I most like to stay downtown for a day or two, even living as close as I do.
The commute is a blah train ride and just takes much out of the whole experience, IMHO. |
How about Glenview area; 20" drive to downtown? I stayed at the Wyndham Suites & loved it. I think there is train going fr. there. I had car rental for the wk staying there.
|
Thank you . I did settle on a downtown condo through vrbo. I hope it works well.

I can pass along an inexpensive rather spartan but clean hotel on the northside where we've stayed...would be closer than suburbs...Heart O Chicago 5990 N. Ridge...773-271-9181...free parking...we've eaten at many places down Clark St. not far away.

I don't know Chicago at all, but we happened upon this gem of a little boutique hotel when we drove cross-country last summer. It's a Best Western, the Hawthorne Terrace.
A very charming little brick hotel, with continental breakfast in the lobby, mini-frig in the room. Great front desk service. It's described as Near North Neighborhood. There were lots of cute restaurants and shops in walking distance. Also a parking garage next door that was reasonable. www.hawthorneterrace.com :)>- |
