I had been considering Florida (Naples or Key West) for aniversary trip, but am now reconsidering. Would anyone have an opinion on Chicago in general for aniversary trip (4 days) and also accomadations, etc... Would really appreciate some suggestions and opinions. We have never been to Chicago. Thanks.

Mark, I grew up in Chicago and have traveled extensively and to me, it is a wonderful city for an anniversary. There are great museums, nightlife and of course shopping. I would stay at The Drake hotel right on the Magnificent Mile. THis is close to shopping, and great restaurants. Its pretty pricey, but well worth it. They have a great afternoon tea in the lobby everyday and a piano player too. Their signature restaurant is very good-don't miss the "Bookbinder soup". Another great hotel is the Four Seasons or the Ritz-Carlton. Great locations for everything. For a romantic dinner for your special day, try Ambria or Avanzare or the Everest Room. The food is wonderful! You didn't mention when you are going, but the weather this time of year is lovely-usually in the high 60's or low 70's. Don't miss the Wendella boat rides through the city, Water Tower Place for shopping, Marshall Field's flagship store on State Street, the Sears Tower, drinks at the top of the John Hancock building (called the 95th). Great view of the city. Also don't forget a handsome cab ride through the city. If you like jazz and champagne, there is a great place called "Pops for Champagne". Neat place-any cabbie knows how to get there. Also, don't forget Greek town. Loads of fun and wonderful food. My favorite is Diana's OPA! If you are into Blues music, check out Kingston Mines, and B.L.U.E.S. Chicago. If you can, get a copy or look online at a publication called "Chicago magazine". Its full of great information on restaurants, etc. Hope this helps!

I agree chicago is a wonderful destination for your anniversary, keep in mind though how unpredictable the weather is here! I second all the recs above and would add that you should stay in the downtown area either on Michigan Avenue or if that is too expensive try the Swisshotel on wacker for views of Navy Pier and Lake Michigan. Also Ranaissance on Wacker is very nice and godd location between michigan Avenue and the flagship Marshall Fields. For a romantic evening take a carriage ride through downtown and have dinner at Geja's in lincoln park which was recently voted top romantic restaurant in Chicago. It is fondue dining and for two probably around $85-$100. You might also look into a dinner cruise on many of the boats at Navy pier for a romantic dinner with a view of the city skyline. I have been on the odessy and it was nice there are many to choose from. Have a good time.

If I'm not mistaken, the Westin River North is the former Nikko. It's a newer property and right on the river at the edge of Loop, but not (imho) as good a location as something on, or just off, Michigan Avenue - which really is the preferable location for a trip such as yours. (I'm also biased against the Swissotel - think it's a bit too far of a walk from all the Boul Mich shopping/etc) Early October weather *should* be quite moderate to warm, but Chicago is nothing if not unpredictable, so take a few things for warmth, just in case. (And after you get your reservation set, I would try checking Priceline about a day before - you might get lucky with a top of the line hotel.)

Definitely bring warm clothes (especially for nighttime) and an umbrella just in case. Can't help you with the hotels-I can never remember which is which. I can say however, that I just returned home to Chicago from a 10-day trip to Spain and was able to appreciate all over again how beautiful Chicago is.
