Chicago - "bad" neighbourhoods
I'll be in Chicago this weekend and would like to stop at Roeser's Bakery (Kedzie and North Ave) to pick up treats for my mother (her old neighbourhood) but read that the neighbourhood should be avoided at all costs etc.
Is it safe to take the bus (or subway/bus) there from the loop? Should a single white female not go in this area alone? Would it be better to take a cab? Do cabs wait while you shop? Thanks for your help. |
Its Humboldt Park neighborhood which is primarily a Puerto Rican community in Chicago. It is undergoing a renaissance to some degree - but does have some crime problems.
I would take a cab and yes, they will wait if you pay them. You will be fine in the daytime. Its a major intersection on a busy road. The bakery looks very nice - they have a nice website. |

Ah yes, Humboldt Park...neighborhood where I sold Good Humour ice cream back in 1948! Quite a change for sure. It is true as said that certain areas are undergoing change and isn't it true for example around Wrigly Field and north lots of gentrification? We used to get into Chi town but not recently. Main thing in a big city is have degree of caution

I'm a female and go through this area all of the time by myself. That is a VERY popular bakery and people come from all over the city and suburbs to go there. You will be fine. Plus you are going during the day. I'd feel perfectly fine taking public transit, but it's up to you. Taking a taxi is just quicker if anything.
