Here's my contribution to the body of travel literature on chestertown, md. My contribution is based on two or three trips. The most recent ended about 20 minutes ago. Here's my report on another trip, which included Lewes Delaware. I hope you know how to pronounce Lewes.

Chestertown is on the chester river, about 3o minutes from the bay bridge, on the eastern shore. Washington College is there. Old houses. Lots of B&B's. The Prince Theater. We had our dog (jake) but no kids with us and stayed one night at the holiday inn express which was sorta fun in an antiseptic way. But what's really fun, if you like this sort of thing, is Rolf's Wharf and Marina, a little beach and beach bar on the river just outside of town. Kids, bikers (with tatoos), locals, corona, dogs, sand, jet skis, crabcakes and fries. And, man, is it fun to swim in the river on a hot day.

We decided to go to chestertown because the ocean was too far and I hate seeing the summer slide by. We drove to Rock Hall for dinner. We sat at a picnic table right by the water and looked at people and sailboats. I liked the Waterman restaurant. Here's what the NYT says about the Waterman.

The next day, sunday morning, this morning, we went back to rock hall and went to the beach on the the bay. It's a simple little beach but it's got what a beach should have, sand and water. It's sort of nice to have the sound of gentle waves, the hot sun, the sand and the glistening bay without the razmataz of real thing beaches like rehoboth and bethany. And the bay felt just as good as the river.

Then we went back to Rolfs for lunch and another swim or two in the river before driving home. We bought a cheap wooden sailboat at an antiques store to put on our mantle which is already too crowded. And some corn and tomatoes at a farm stand. That was our weekend.

Jake had a good time too.

I jumped in our river last week but it felt like bathwater. It amazes me that such a big body of water as the mighty James could heat up like that.

Chestertown is lovely. We were watching my son play in a golf tournament at the course across the street from the yacht club. The river was filled with the white sails of the kids' boats in sailing class.

The new president of Washington College moved there from William and Mary. A little bit o' trivia for you.

Holiday Inn Express hotels allow Jakes?

The sailboats are fun to watch. It seems like such a different world, watching from the dock. HI Express does take dogs; the fees are $15 and up. We had fun.
