Melanie,

Hello. I'm Sandi, and I went to the Cherry Blossom Festival in D.C. last spring. I planned for the trip months in advance. Had a great time, but the parade was really a let-down, in my opinion. I would have much rather spent the time seeing more of the historical sites and Smithsonian museums. I am very rarely negative about any of my trips or the activities I have participated in during them, but this parade was just not what I had hoped it would be.

Actually, the blossoms were early last year and didn't even get to see any of them. That was the worst disappointment of all. I hope you get to see the cherry trees in full bloom.

Sorry to any D.C. natives who I may have offended.

Sandi

Another website. This one also gives information on possible times of blooms.
http://www.nps.gov/nacc/cherry/index.htm

While you're checking on the blossoms, you might also contact the Park Service about the beavers. A year or so ago, some beavers arrived from the Potomac and did what beavers do, cut down about 9 Japanese cherry trees. The Park Service announced "problem solved" when it trapped three beavers ... forgetting that approximately 10,000 inhabit the river. BTW, you're right about that parade ... you'd be better served to hang out by the trees themselves at the Tidal Basin and also see the FDR Memorial next to it. But watch for those beavers .... TIMBER. Ciao

The update in today's Washington Post said that the blossoms should peak between March 31 and April 5.

Ilisa, I'm sorry, but did today's Post say anything about when the beavers would peak? I know you remember the beaver threat two or three years ago ... true, they did nail 9 trees, but the NPS response was so funny ... they announced that the trapped beavers were diven by Park Service vehicle to a remote spot and released ... lets see, remote would mean no witnesses, and as I recall rangers carry side arms ... hmmmm. Ciao

You should have posted before you spent several months planning a trip for the Cherry Blossom Festival. We all could have told you that the parade's nothing special (and has never been billed as anything special), and that the blossom seem to know when the festival has been planned, and make a special effort to bloom well before or just after.
