I just checked on Travelocity and the Doubletree Boston Downtown is listing rates from $116-$145. It is a good downtown location, but on the fringe of a semi-seedy area. Walking distance to everything. I expect parking is extra. Site says they have a pool. Not my first choice of where to stay, but within your price range and 100 times better than Chelsea.

I'd grab the Doubletree Boston Downtown for that price. If you stayed in Newton, you'd be paying $2.50 per person to ride the T into town, and another $1 to return ($17.50/day just on transportation). You might take this figure into account if the hotel charges for parking. The area isn't that bad. It's near a major hospital, the theater district and Chinatown, and walkable to anywhere downtown. It used to be a high school, and I understand the pool and health facilities are excellent, though I haven't actually been in the hotel. Send us a report.

Ugh ! I'd NEVER stay in Chelsea. Better to explore your options in Cambridge or stay in that Days Inn / Holiday Inn in Newton.

Ken:

One of the better bargains to be found in Boston is:

* John Jeffries House *
14 David G. Mugar Way, Boston
Massachusetts 02114 USA
Neighborhood: Beacon Hill
Phone: (617) 367-1866
Fax: (617) 742-0313
$ 95 - $ 175 , from $ 140 suite
Capacity: 46 units
"Just off bustling Charles Street, this hotel is wonderfully well-priced. The rooms and suites are tastefully decorated and all have kitchenettes. A continental breakfast is included."

Hi again, I would like to thank every one of you for your comments. I am now leaning towards a deal if 199 a night including free parking and 5 breakfasts right by the theater district, swan boats, etc, the downtown Radisson. Location and price sounds good. Has anyone stayed there? Good experience?
Thanks
Ken

I'm a Bostonian with no direct experience of that hotel -- but it's in a location that's infinitely better than Chelsea, and with breakfast included that's a pretty good deal!
