Do what BeachBoi says first, THEN you can go to the post office AFTER you find one that in facts offers the service. You dont get a passport at the PO -- they will take your forms and your $$ and they will send it to the central Govt passport agency in your region. This saves you a trip from the days you had to go in to get it.
Why go to the site first?? You read HOW to do all this and GET THE FORMS you need. You fill em all out before going to the PO. Allow time, it cost alot extra to expedite. And do NOT go thru some "service" that will do it for you. They just send your forms in.

Sorry for the less than "exact" wording. No, you don't actually get the passport at the post office, but if your local one handles applications, it is definitely the easiest way to apply for one. And, with the original poster not needing hers until April, it is probably the route for her to take. Just stop at the post office, pick up the form, ask the relevant questions and you're well on your way.
