Cheap Motels in Vermont

I'll be coming over from the UK to tour New England (Vermont etc) from 29th September for 2 weeks with my girlfriend. Please help with advice on cheap places to stay as we will be on a budget. Can anyone recommend any cheap motel/hotel chains circa the $60 mark? Many thanks.

You are coming at peak tourist time so prices are probably going to be at their highest until after the foliage season is over. In New England, there are the following chains: Days Inn, Red Roof, Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, Super 8 and Econo Lodge. You might find less expensive rates at a 'mom & pop' locally owned motel, check the internet yellow pages for the city/town where you'll be staying.

The advice above is excellent. Rates will absolutely be at their very highest during those dates in NH, VT, Western, MA and Boston. This is PEAK foliage ("Leaf Peepers") season. You may have difficulty securing any rooms at all at this late date. Along the coast (ME, Cape Cod) rates will be lower, as they are primarily summer destinations. But, $60/night is terribly unrealistic. Check those chains, though, for an idea of prices and availability. All have websites for doing same. Note that many will have two or three night minimum stay requirements, so if your search for one night comes up "not available" try two or three nights.

Thanks for your help both Donnas. I've trawled through some of the motel websites that you mentioned and have come across some pretty good deals. I had planned to tour around, find a motel and then move off to the next place. That's looking a bit dodgy I think. Would you recommend I pre-book the accomodation or do you think I might find some "independant" Motels/B&B's where I might be able to just turn up and still get a reasonable rate? It looks like availability is better in Vermont than New Hampshire, so maybe I'll just avoid this state. Cape Cod sounds a good option. Is there much going on here October time?

Thanks again!

A couple of years ago I took a budget trip at peak time. I planned to be in the top leaf towns of Vermont on weekdays and in the cities on weekends to cut down on crowds. I also stayed at basic motels rather than resorts or nice B&Bs, although I did find some reasonable rates at basic B&Bs. So, we didn't get great atmostphere, but clean rooms at reasonable cost (<$100). I booked just a few weeks in advance and could find rooms, but not a lot of choice. I would not suggest traveling in this area on a weekend without a reservation.

Examples of places we stayed:
Colonial Hotel, Gardner, Massachusetts
(had a special that included dinner)
Carlson's Lodge, Twin Mountain, NH
Comfort Inn?, White River Junction, Vt

If you go to the large cities such as Boston, you may try bidding through Priceline.com, but I would expect their inventory to be small during peak season.

Pre-book! NH is so close and both states are so little that you could make a loop into NH from VT. I think I would choose Rhode Island over Cape Cod. Check to see when Providence is having Water Fire. Providence hotels are expensive but Warwick is only a few minutes away. There's a canal that goes thru the city that has huge torches down the middle. There's lots of great restaurants plus Providence is a college town. What are your interests? Eastern States Exposition will be going on in Springfield MA. It's a huge agricultural fair with a midway, demonstrations, entertainment. Each New England state has a building where they have displays about the state. One of the best fairs for agriculture and crafts is the Common Ground Fair in Maine. It might be the last weekend in September. It focuses on organic farming. A calendar of events is usually listed in the Sunday and Thursday editions of newspapers. You might also try Yankee Magazine's website at www.newengland.com.

I'm a brit that has visited Vermont quite a few times.
You can access info on motels (and their websites) through the following websites, most motels will very quickly reply to email requests for prices. So I suggest you narrow your choices then email them for availability and price. The majority will be very helpful and reply quickly to your requests.- I do not know which area of vermont you are interested in so I have included a wide choice.
www.seevermont.com
www.govermont.com
www.southvermont.com
www.manchesterandmtns.com
www.gostowe.com
www.southernvermont.com
www.virtualvermont.com
www.vtliving.com
www.vermonttoday.com
www.scenesofvermont.com

Have a great time
