Cheap Hotel near Boston Airport

We arrive in to Boston airport at 9pm on Oct 4th. 2 couples.
We can either pick up our rental car that night or the next morning from the airport.

We will be heading north up along the coast of Maine for the next few days. Any suggestions of where to stay overnight. We do not want to drive too far but the airport hotels seem to be very expensive.

Ant suggestions?

All hotels will be expensive as it's October/leaf peeping season.

Here's a link to a list of cheap hotels with airport shuttle so you won't need transport to/from the airport.

Note: these prices are almost double what these hotels go for in low season!

If you pick up your car that night and are prepared to drive north immediately you will probably get a better deal.

I checked your other thread and as you're just coming from New Orleans I'd definitely recommend driving north that night. It's a Sunday and there will be little traffic at that time and you don't have to drive for more than an hour.

You could look on Hotwire for airport hotels.

Hotels near routes 1 and 95 north of the airport will not be cheap because of the Topsfield Fair.

You may find better hotel rates if you head north along route 93 to the city of Woburn.

You might get better advice if you can tell us you first destination after getting your car.

The hotels listed in the link above include 7-14 nights of parking. That site is intended for locals who have early flights. They drive there and sleep over the night before, get the shuttle to the airport and leave their car at the hotel. You may get lower rates, since you are nit leaving a car there. It may be worth looking into.

If you find a truly cheap hotel around Logan, please post the name here before you think you have found a bargain. There are some sketchy hotels in Revere, Everett, Chelsea that are more often used by drug dealers, prostitutes, and as emergency welfare housing. Mostly these are independent, non-chain names - but be careful.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions.

We are thinking that as our flight gets in at 9pm and by the time we get the rental car picked up it will be about 10pm so we are thinking of not driving too far north.

I have been looking at many hotels near and far and have been keen on Four Points by Sheraton Airport hotel. The rate is quite reasonable. Or Red Roof plus Saugas. Any thoughts?

We did look at driving up to Salem, but the combination of lateness, unfamiliar roads and driving on the other side of the road. I think we would be best not travelling too far.

I've stayed at the Four Points Sheraton a few times. Sometimes we've parked our car there for 14 nights and not slept at the hotel as the rate inc parking is cheaper than the airport ;)
It's not our airport hotel of choice but it's fine! It's tired looking and nondescript but the shuttle is efficient.

fun01960, the dates are the problem more so than the included parking charge. These hotels regularly sell out in October but I've seen rates around $99 for low season when booked in advance (cheaper than parking at Logan).

aussie_10, I understand your reluctance to drive late but the unfamiliar roads will still be there in the morning plus the week day traffic. A case of damned if you do and damned if you don't!
Just make sure you have GPS and take it slow at the start whether you drive at night or not.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply.

Someone asked me earlier where we are eventually heading in the next days. I forgot to say in my previous post.
We are heading up the coast of Maine and we are thinking of stopping for 2 nights in Portland (but this is not set yet and are still reading up on places).

So that is the direction we will go So maybe a town along the way but not too far from the airport. I had looked at a couple of Salem B&Bs but they are very expensive.
But probably by the time we arrive maybe a 24 hour hotel would be better.

Any suggestions for an o/n along that way.

We've also found hotels.com to be fairly reliable for descriptions and ratings. And you know your choice.

There is a place in Winthrop that is very simple and clean and cheap, I paid $89 a few weeks ago. It is a residence inn.
I recommend it, though I am not sure of the shuttle hours.

You might find my thread from last year informative - we did a similar trip and gail, especially, was very helpful in guiding us to a non-sketchy area! We ended up with the Doubletree in Danvers on a Hotwire bid, which put us in a great position to head north to Acadia the next day. It was about 20 minutes from Logan, mostly on a divided highway, so not a terrible intro to driving in the US, except there were a couple of roundabouts you'd need to make sure and go the correct way on! But traffic that late was much, much lighter than when we took the car back a week later during the day.

Beverly Garden Suites is an easy drive from the airport and will put you north of any Monday morning traffic.

gail Feb 8th, 2015 02:17 AM

The Residence Inn mentioned above I think is the one in Chelsea - there is not one in Winthrop. There is nothing in the area except auto repair shops, but if you are looking for a place to sleep it is fine. Not all that easy to find - and make sure you have good directions to get to Rte1 and then I95 from the hotel. Or if they have a shuttle, pick up your car the next AM.

bassharborbaby Feb 8th, 2015 04:18 AM

I would consider one of the many chain hotels on Route 1, heading north from Logan. The 'heading north' part would be important, due to your relatively late arrival, ultimate destination and driving on the other side of the road. A north-bound hotel would allow direct access from Route 1 as opposed to a south-bound hotel which would require you to head north, find an exit and then head south. Picking up your car that night will save a lot of time.

Ultimately, the choice will be how much will you save for how much inconvenience. Have a great time - Maine is beautiful.

Thank you for all of your suggestions, I have been loping them all up.

I also have been looking at the Hawthorne Hotel Salem.

Google maps says it is 35mins from Boston Airport.
As we would like to visit Salem on our trip north we are thinking that this might be doable and it has a 24hr desk.

Traffic should be light hopefully that time of night.

What do yo think?

clarkgriswold Feb 9th, 2015 09:31 AM

Sounds like a great solution, you can have half of Monday in Salem and then move onward. And the car rental pickup should be a breeze on Sunday night compared to Monday morning.

sassy_cat Feb 9th, 2015 11:01 AM

I don't know the hotel but it would be a much better choice to spend Sunday night somewhere north of the airport rather than an airport hotel imo.

Hi all

Thank you for your suggestions. After much searching and a few emails we have booked a B&B in Marblehead. Its not too far from the airport and looks like a good location and good price too.

We can also explore Salem from there the next day.
