Becco is a good suggestion. However, it is on Restaurant Row and will be packed every evening there is theatre from 6:30 - 8:00. Also, it is OK on ambience but its not known for it. Still, the pastas are very good.
Downtown, on Thompson off of Houston Street you can try Lupa, Mario Batali's spot. Excellent, not too expensive and it has a good vibe. Call ahead, way ahead. However, they set aside many tables for walk-ins and, thus, if you have time, you can show up and wait a bit.
If you want other than Italian, try Les Halles on Park Avenue South for a good steak frites. It is a crowded good bistro with good food. Steak frites are about $20 and it has a good wine and beer selection.
