Cheap calls to Europe from NY
Hello, we're coming for 9 days in NY during Christmas time, and we will have to make several phone calls from there to friends and family during the holidays.
We will bring our mobiles with us but i'm sure they will be pretty expensive to use them, so i was thinking other options.
In Europe you can buy prepaid cards and use them fron any phone. Do you have these kind of cards and are there many phone booths available in the streets?

I have not used them before but NobelCom <http://www.nobelcom.com/> bills themselves as "The World’s Leading Phone Card Website". Check out their web site. This may be a possibility for you.

The rates are very low through this service. We have used it many times. For more info on the rates see www.10-10phonerates.com/intl.html

I have used nobel.com and it was fine (when my son was in Italy), but my favorite phone card is the Flying Colors card from Zaptel.com. We've used it many times when our son was in the Dominican Republic for 4 months, in Peru for 3 weeks, and now in Uganda for the last 5 months. A friend used it when his daughter was in Brazil. It offers a good price, good connections, great website, etc. You can program your account so you don't have to enter a PIN number - you just dial the access number and then the phone number. Before each connection, it tells you how much money/minutes you have left on the car. We're paying 17 cents a minute to call Kampala, Uganda. You don't need to carry around a card - just write down the access number.

Thanks so much for the info!
One question though (or two to be more accurate ;-)
Will i be able to use this 'cards' or 'codes' from any phone booths in the city? Also will they let me use it from the hotel phone? ( i doubt that... Has anybody ever used it from a hotel room?)
Thanks!!

Christine, you ought to be able to use the cards/access numbers on your mobile phone. That's what we have done when away from home. You can call zaptel to ask -- they're very helpful. Their phone number is 1-877-532-2737, or you can email them at "support at zaptel.com"
