Cheap but Safe Places to stay near Glacier NP?

I'm thinking that staying in Whitefish or Kallispell would be closest. Any suggestions on specific places? Thanks!

Camping is probably the cheapest, in the park itself.

I don't know what you mean by safe?? Crime, bears, auto accidents!!!! Your safe anywhere if you want to enjoy the area camp and be smart about it. You can find more info then you need about camping in bear and cat counrty on the net. Enjoy the area is precious.

We aren't campers (at least not yet), so I am thinking cheap, but safe hotels near Glacier - with easy access to the park. We will hike a lot and I am a photog, so I will takes lots of pictures. I've driven out west a few times and have stayed in places like Best Western that are great. Then, I've stayed in some really run-down motels that made me worry about my photo equipment (not to mention myself!) Does this clarify?

I would do a tripadvisor.com search for lodging in Whitefish, or even West Glacier. That would be the best way to find quality accomodation close to the park at a decent price. Not sure what you mean by "safe", though. You don't have to worry about street crime in the area.

Your best bet is to stay in the park--camping if necessary. Why? You can see the place when day-trippers are gone and you can get a parking place.

Twelve years ago we tried to save money by staying at a Super 8 in Whitefish. That was a HUGE mistake.

When we went to Glacier two years ago, rates were higher in Whitefish. Whitefish & Kalispell are not real close to Glacier. There is a Super 8 in Columbia Falls. Also check Hungry Horse. If there are any rooms left, Apgar Village in West Glacier, has varying rates (motel rooms & cabins). There is also a KOA in West Glacier with basic cabins (you provide bedding, etc.). Reservations for summer fill up fast around Glacier. Good luck!

My husband and son stayed St Mary in a motel run by Native Americans. The attached restaurant was great, limited number of choices on menu but served family style. (on eastern side of park)

Try the Izaak Walton Inn in Essex, MT. Next door to GNP.

I really think you would be safe in most hotels, in whitfish, kalispell, or the ones right by the entrance to the park. Enjoy. Thanks for the clarifaction. Not a lot of crime in the area from what I've seen.
