Will be visiting New York in December and was wondering what is the best method of getting show tickets at a reasonable price

When in December? It'll make a big diffence in your options and what's how mnay shows are likely to be available at a discount.

Your title is misleading. I don't think "cheap" Broadaway tickets are available ever. But there are reasonable ones from a number of sources. For starters go to www.theatremania.com; www.playbill.com; and www.broadwaybox.com
all three should offer a number of shows at discounts in advance. You may have to register, but it is free and easy. For the most part you copy down codes you can use when you call teletron or ticketmaster. It will guide you through the steps. But I suggest you call rather than book on line. You are likely to get a better choice of seats when speaking to a real person, but still using the discount codes.
