Cheap Accomodation in lively areas hawaii?
Hi. can anyone tell me the cheapest option for accomodation for 6 young people to stay in on a 2 week trip to oahu, the BI and Maui?????
|
Camping or hostels.
|
Those are probably the cheapest but Oahu does have a couple of other options if something else is desired the Aqua Continental and the Royal Grove.
On the BI you might try Uncle Billy's in either Hilo or Kona. |
Camping is the cheapest. Then hostels.
To make the trip cheaper one strategy would be not to go to 3 islands. That really runs up the cost. If you just went to Oahu you could save a lot. As I said on your other thread with this same question... the Royal Grove Hotel is a VERY good bargain. And the rooms have kitchens which also saves money. Plus it's right near the beach. www.royalgrovehotel.com |
If you put "hostel in honolulu" into a Google search, a long list of options will pop up.

Aston Waikiki Sunset has 2-bdrm units that accommodate 6 people.
You can also find some units there on www.vrbo.com . Also www.vrbo.com for other islands. Most vrbo units require 5-7 days minimum. But you might be able to deal with them for less days. As Suze says, Royal Grove on Oahu is a good choice on Oahu. Much better than a hostel & maybe even less expensive if you can get 3 to a room. You are all young & 2 islands are probably better than three as you'll be back anyway. Lots of info: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...trip-to-hi.cfm |
You can get 3 to a room at Royal Grove. The room rates are based on 2 people, but you can add a 3rd for $10/night extra.

What is the budget per night per person? Cheapest is going to be camping, hostels, rustic cabins that you have to hike to. When you are talking about six people, there is a big difference between $20/nt per person and $60/nt per person.
I am going to second the opinion that you not travel to all three islands. I would pick two at a maximum because seeing enough of all three islands in two weeks wouldn't be cost effective in my opinion (travel between the islands is not cheap). That frees up money that you would have spent on traveling for accommodations instead. With that many people, you can probably find some good choices on vrbo.com in the $60-$70pp/nt range. You can probably even find some hotels at that rate and you do 3 people per room. On Maui, I recently stayed at the Hale Pau Hana resort (www.hphresort.com)...You could easily fit 6 people into 2 rooms. Their rates were reasonable, you choose which rooms you like from their website, you have a beautiful oceanview from your condo, and you are right on a nice beach with no seaweed issues (this is a concern with some beaches on Maui), you have a heated pool, a lanai with huge sliding glass doors, a full kitchen, and you are able to walk to some good, affordable shops and restaurants across the street...and you are a short drive from just about anything in Kihei. Laundry facilities are on site and they have little gathering events on the lawn. The only downsides are that A/C is only in the bedroom (not a problem when I went in December) and that with the bedroom being closest to the street, if you are a light sleeper, traffic noise might be an issue. On Oahu, vrbo.com is probably the way to go. Personally, I would opt to stay outside of the Honolulu area. I would find a vacation rental in Kailua or Haleiwa. Those locations are not as lively as Honolulu...but for me, Honolulu is just too much...and these are smaller beach towns. For example: http://www.vrbo.com/5151 is an option in Kailua that sleeps up to 8...at $350/nt split 6 ways, that's less than $60pp/nt. It seems to be booked for the next couple of months and I'm not sure when you are planning to go. You can find options like this on vrbo.com or Google "vacation rental Oahu" and find others. If you stay in Kailua, you must have breakfast at Cinnamon's. The Big Island really is big...so depending on what you intend to see, my recommendations would vary here, but vrbo.com would work here as well. |
