Chateau Souverian - gone?

Chateau Souverian was recommended by many to me for tasting and lunch however I see that it has been bought by Coppola. Is it still the same or worth going to? thanks.

Have you looked at the chateau's web site? The correct spelling, BTW, if Souverain.

Catbert Jul 25th, 2006 10:36 AM

It's still beautiful and you can still have lunch and tasting there. It just seems to have switched from a French Chateaux to an Italian one. We were there in May and I thought it was still worth a visit.

My apologies on the spelling! Thanks for the feedback. Just wanted to make sure it was still a good place to check out. Do they have a good tour?

We were there not long before the sale, and it definitely was badly in need of new management. Terrible service at lunch, winery was fine though. It's a gorgeous spot, hope they do well.

Thanks LLindaC - you have been so helpful in planning this trip!

About 20 years ago. Lunch there. I'll never ever forget the chocolate "bag" filled with white chocolate mousse, topped with raspberries and sitting in a pool of strawberry coulis.

I just looked at CS site and they have a tasting room in Healdsburg. So, is it true that the facility now run by the Coppola family is serving the Diamond series there? Yuck! Sorry, it's okay table wine, but that would be a downer. Plus they charge 5 dollars tasting fee. Please tell me that the restaurant serves other types of wines as well!

shelja Jul 25th, 2006 02:04 PM

That is how I understood it as well - that they serve their Diamond series there, which I agree is not great and that is why I was questioning? However, I hear the food and view were great and wonder if that still exists? Thanks.

We don't think that the restaurant was any good even prior to the sale. That restaurant always had lot's of empty tables and reviewers weren't too kind with it.

The olod Souverain wines were just OK, but the Coppola Diamond series is definitely not a step up. If you want some of those stuff, just go to the nearest Safeway supermarket.

LLindaC Jul 25th, 2006 04:23 PM

truly- how can they charge 5 bucks for a tasting fee when you can buy the wines for $8?

Kal Jul 25th, 2006 04:26 PM

No wonder why I can't retire right now... :-?

shelja Jul 25th, 2006 05:03 PM

Thanks - I don't think we will be going there...

LLindaC Jul 25th, 2006 08:36 PM

shelja,
please email me at [email protected] and I'll see if we can get you a private tasting at Viansa. It was incredible!
