Charlston Without a Car

We are scheduler to spend 3 days in Charleston and then a week on Edisto Island in May. I am wondering if it's possible to enjor Charleston without a car. We'll certainly rent one to get to and around Edisto. Any help much appreciate.

Hi williamdaniel7896,

Some I suspect prefer the flexibility of having a car, but I had a lovely time in Charleston without one, probably works best staying in the downtown peninsula, which is reasonably compact. I saw numerous interesting historic homes/sights, museums and Fort Sumter easily. I attach a link to some free shuttles that I used which worked nicely.

Happy travels! Daniel

What Daniel said--and actually did. I have often said Charleston is perhaps our most "european" city in its walkability and sites and food. And of course, there is always Uber.

Absolutely no car necessary in Charleston proper, but if you want to spend one day or part of one day to visit a plantation, you will have to find transportation. We had a car, so I can't suggest other alternatives.

As a Charleston native, you can certainly enjoy the downtown peninsula without a car. There's plenty to see and do while walking around downtown. As mentioned earlier, the plantations both in West Ashely (Middleton, Drayton Hall, Magnolia) and Mt Pleasant (Boone Hall) can be reached via Uber pretty reasonably. You're welcome to check out my travel blog and I write about Charleston a good, hopefully it's helpful.

Appreciate the advice. Has anyone stayed at, or know about the Indigo Inn? Might be our kind of place.

Just keep an eye on the weather. Occasionally the humidity kicks up and makes walking around pretty darn uncomfortable.
