I love this city also, and visit as often as I can. We have a condo in Myrtle Beach, a 2 hour drive to Charleston, and sometimes we take a "beach break" to visit this wonderful city. The boat ride out to Fort Sumter is also interesting if you're in to this part of history. The Charleston Place hotel is fabulous, next time you go just look at the lobby if you don't stay there. Gorgeous! Try Hyman's for a quick lunch..
We've done several of the walking tours and the guidebooks are great.
I believe those benches are called "courting benches". If you ever go to Charleston in September, try to get on the "Ghost Walk and House Tour" sponsored by a charity group. It was great, and you get into some of the homes that are closed to the public and hear some great tales! Also try Anson's for dinner, and definitely take one of the carriage tours. The commentary on the history of Charleston is amazing..you really learn a lot!
I agree with you about the Peninisula Grill...I'll have to try the others you mentioned next time around. And I'd definitely like to take the Gullah and plantation tours. Thanks so much for this in-depth report! This is why I love the Fodor's website!

Glad you enjoyed Charleston..it's one of my favorite cities also.
The name of those benches for two that "bounce" are "courting benches". The man and woman sit at opposite ends, and "bounce" toward each other and end up in the middle!
