My wife and I will be going to Charleston this summer. Any recommendations on restaraunts to go to? We like nice to fine dining. Also are there any bars you recommend?

Here's my trip report, which includes some restaurant info.
https://www.fodors.com/community/uni...rleston-sc.cfm We didn't try it, but some people we met spoke highly of High Cotton. |
Friends and I spent a week in the Charleston area in late September. Lots of great food choices. Our favorites in Charleston itself:
Husk http://huskrestaurant.com/ 82 Queen https://www.82queen.com/ Hank's Seafood https://hanksseafoodrestaurant.com/ We also ate at a great place on the Isle of Palms, the Long Island Cafe. In a strip mall, but it's quite handsome inside and the food was fab. http://www.longislandcafesc.com/ All of the places we ate at were very busy and reservations were essential. |
|
In the fine, more traditional dining style, Magnolias and, as WeisserTee mentioned, Hank's Seafood, (if you go to Hank's have coffee and dessert at Kaminsky's, just around the corner)
Slighty less traditional, but one that we enjoyed, is SNOB. The open kitchen at SNOB is an integral part of the dining experience. Very good food, knowledgeable staff, extensive American wine list. Our favorite eating area of Charleston is on Morrison Dr., north of Hwy 17. We can't wait to go back to Butcher and Bee, Tatooed Moose and Edmund's Oast in the tavern and brewpub category. It is hard to go wrong in Charleson. |
In Mount Pleasant, Grace and Grit is fabulous. Just opened this year with Chef Frank Kline, formerly of Acme Lowcountry Reataurant on Isle of Palms. It is a beautiful place, and has wonderful dishes. Acme is still excellent, as well.
|
Hardly traditional but Xiao Bao Biscuit is wonderful according to my foodie kids--and DGS who lives in Mt. Pleasant.
These same kids (restaurant owners themselves) had very poor experience at Husk. As everyone knows, on any given night, something can happen. It really is hard to go wrong in Charleston http://xiaobaobiscuit.com/ |
We loved Husk, and enjoyed their bar next door, too.
Also really liked High Cotton, and thought the bar was great for classic cocktails. We went to Cru Cafe for lunch and wished we had time to return for diner. The only dud was 5 Church, which I would encourage you to avoid at all costs! |
I was underwhelmed by Husk.
Loved SNOB and FIG. Like Magnolias. A bit old school but very nice. For casual (lunch perhaps) Hominy Grill is very good. |
Charleston Grille was to die for. Fig was ok. The Ordinary was quite good.
|
High Cotton was my favourite for dinner and Cru was my favourite for lunch. We also quite liked The Ordinary.
|
We loved Tavern and Table on Shem Creek. Their grilled cheese sandwich with short rib meat was incredible and they made great drinks! Upscale but very laid back... it was our perfect find!
|
Magnolia was outstanding. The sea scallop appetizer was top notch. We liked Fig, but not sure we would return with all the other options.Very nice shrimp and grits at SNOB.
|
Our new favorite is 167 Raw Bar! Try the scallop po'boy! SNOB has been bought by another group and Frank Lee is no longer the chef and it is reflected in the food.
A fun night is cooking class with Bob Waggoner who was once the chef at Charleston Grille before Michele Weaver. I agree that "Fig" is okay. Isle of Palms favorite is Obstinate Daughter and Wild Olive on John"s Island. Trattoria Lucca is always great and we love Cru! |
OH, we ate at Tratorria Lucca the weekend of the eclipse when we couldn't get in another restaurant nearby. What a FIND!! Absolutely wonderful REAL Italian, in a beautiful space. Great service.
|
I second Tavern and Table on Shem Creek.

Gretchen: My friends from NYC make a point to eat at Trattoria Lucca every time they visit Charleston. It is their favorite restaurant in the city! I've never been, but I did like Husk and The Ordinary well enough.
