Suggestions for places to stay with kids for two nights near Charleston. Want to be on the beach. Thank you!

Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms

The Tides in Folly Beach-right next to the pier.

Sullivans Island, very shallow beach and ferry to Charleston.

Good restaurants.

These are all great recommendations. Now you just have to look for specific properties and do a price/ value decision.

Following on from Ackislander's comment, generally Sullivans is the more expensive area.

Rentals below $3,000 a week are few and far between. For larger places on the beach, $10,000 plus is the norm.

To be honest, if you don't object to being a little further from Charleston then we always stay on Edisto. It is a less least developed Sea Island, which is heaving with wildlife and the rentals are much more cost effective. We always rent a huge 3 bed house, with a private dock, high end interiors and 50 yards from the beach, kayaks and bikes : all for $1,500 a week.

From here it is easy to get lot Beaufort, Charleston and Savannah. Botany Bay Plantation has an incredible beach for shell hunting but taking them home is banned. The beaches on Edisto are great for fossil and shark teeth hunting, the roads are very safe for cycling and the marshes great and safe for kayaking with dolphins.

We have visited most of the sea islands between Jacksonville and Boston.

We like Ediso best.

Some don't, we just love it.

Main downside is the food is at best average but when you can barbecue what you catch off the dock, who gives a damn about the quality of the restaurants.

Dickie, it is for 2 nights!! A house might be more than they need/want.

Thank you! Yes, we are doing a road trip and will be only be staying two nights at the beach. We will already be in Charleston but are open to other areas within a two hour radius.

When are you going?

If you were going in the offseason, you could get a house for only a couple of nights. June that will not be feasible I would guess.

There are few rental houses on Sullivans and they want to keep it that way. Beach houses normally rent Sat-Sat. And sorry, no ferry. There is a water taxi from Mt. Pleasant.

OP, for 2 nights you will need a hotel. The Tides on Folly would work, as would the hotel in Wild Dunes. You could also look at one of the condo-tels on IOP, but I've heard mixed reviews.

You might want to get on it. Places at the beach fill up fast during summer.

To sort of summarize for the OP:

The three beaches closest to Charleston are Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, and Folly Beach.

Sullivan's Island has no hotels or bed and breakfasts of any sort.

Isle of Palms has two hotels in the "business district" section of the island...The Palms and the Seaside Inn. I would check reviews on those two. I've never been inside them, but they look a little worn. There is a third hotel, the Boardwalk Inn, that is part of the Wild Dunes Resort.

Folly Beach has one hotel, The Tides.

If none of those places suit you, consider staying in Mt. Pleasant and driving to the beach. One summer, my husband and I wanted to extend our stay in the area after week on the beach with our entire family. We spent two nights at the Shem Creek Inn in Mt. Pleasant and it was fun being right on the creek/water. It's not fancy, but if you can't be on the beach, it might meet your needs.

Sue is right about making reservations soon, though. June is not only the beginning of summer vacations for many families, but the first week of June is also part of the Spoleto festival in Charleston and the entire area is pretty busy. Good luck!
