Charleston / Savannah in January

We'd like to visit Charleston, Savannah and Beaufort. Our vacation time is in January and wanted to now if the cities are lively at this time of the year or if being the low winter season it could be depressing. We don't mind the weather being cold, but we would not like to visit these places if the atmosphere is rather sad.
We have 9 days and the options are Charleston/Savannah or Naples (Florida).
Which other places would you recommend in South Carolina/Georgia?
We have plenty of time ahead, but we have to arrange international flights in the next month.
All opinions will be much appreciated.

Charleston is always "open"--the historic district, the food. It can be absolutely beautiful weatherwise. Naples is a lovely place but in a resort sort of way to me.

They are both wonderful. No chance of the beach except for a walk in the Charleston area. Quite a good chance in Naples. It will be lots warmer, though the locals may shiver.

Charleston has historic architecture, real history, great restaurants, fantastic shopping at the high end.

Naples lacks history and is an architectural pastiche, albeit an attractive one. A very attractive one. It also has great restaurants and fantastic shopping. Both ave more golf than you would have time to play.

We owned property in Naples and it was wonderful. We currently spend our winters in Richmond because our grandchildren are here, but if they moved somewhere odious, I would be in favor of winters in Charleston.

You really can't lose.
