Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville
We (couple) are looking to fly from Boston into CHS on or about April 22, enjoy the city for a few days, then drive on to Savannah. After a few days there, we plan to drive on to Jacksonville to visit friends. Looking for advice....
How many days should we allow in Charleston and in Savannah? We love the back roads - what are the best routes and what are good stops along the way? How much travel time do you think we should allow? We also like b and bs rather than motels or large hotels. What are some favorites? What should we be sure not to miss? What kind of weather to expect? Thanks, everyone! |
Three days in Charleston and two in Savannah.
Drive SC Highway 17 South from Charleston to Savannah. Driving through the ACE Basin is a treat. |
US17 is your best bet. In fact, unless you want the Interstate, it's about the only one. Continue on 17 to Jacksonville. You will go through an area that has a lot of old colonial ruins of villiages and forts. There are Historical markers all over the place. Nothing VERY exciting, but you will get a good picture of how things were. Going from Savh to Jax on 17 will take about 2 hours if you take in the scenery. There is a house museum at Midway Ga that is interesting for one thing, the people came from an area in Europe (I forget where) where everyone was very small. A 5'4" man was TALL, and the women were much shorter. Therefore all the furniture looks as if it came from a large play house. It's a little weird for normal size people to look at.
The weather is usually excellent. But you know how rain is....it never falls when you want it to. |
Thank you for your replies!
Where do you recommend staying in both Chs and Svnh? We like inns, b&b's and historic houses. |
check out www.tripadvisor.com and look at the hotel/motel listings. There are forums for both Savannah and Charleston that will give you a good idea of things to do and where to stay.
It's a good time of year to come. Please enjoy yourself. |
Two weeks ago, we have stayed five nights in Savannah. We had plenty do do there, exploring the city and doing daytrips into the surrounding area: Bonaventure Cemetery, Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski, hiking in Skidaway State Park...
The Savannah hotels didn't appeal to us. We did not want to stay in one of those big business hotels or in an expensive bed&breakfast without spa and pool. So we ended, renting a wonderful old house with jacuzzi and hotel-like service from http://www.savannahgetaways.net/. It was a fantastic experience. Since we love to cook, we bought fresh seafood at Russo's in Savannah and cooked wonderful meals. |
