Charleston, President weekend or memorial weekend?

Hi, My husband and I plan to have a long weekend in Charleston. This will be our first time in Charleston. I know the best time to visit there is Spring, but we do not have vacation days in March and April:(.....We are thinking about this President long weekend or Memorial weekend... Which is better time? Thank you in advance!!!

I live at Folly Beach - about 15 minutes from downtown Charleston. If you plan to enjoy the beach areas (there are several) - you should wait for Memorial weekend. President's weekend has less tourists so you may get better rates however.

Have fun - we have nice shopping downtown on King Street, great restaurants and there always seems to be festivals, wine tastings, etc. going on each weekend. Go to Charleston City Paper on line and you'll find lists and links to reviews for many restaurants and events as well as upcoming entertainment.

I would go President's Weekend because Spoleto is over Memorial Weekend and accommodations will cost a fortune and restaurants and attractions will be miserably packed.

Spoleto (www.SpoletoUSA.org and www.PiccoloSpoleto.com) will have tremendous amounts of world class music, dance, theater, entertainment, etc but it may be too crowded to enjoy.

This is a world class event not a local one.

Isn't there also a wildlife artists exhibition sometime in the winter? I know the rates are less in Feb unless it happens to be either this weekend or the Antique Show weekend.

The Boone Hall Oyster Festival is Sunday January 28th and it is a Do Not Miss.

$10 to get in and oysters are market price and beers around $3. Big huge party and it opens at 10AM. All proceeds to benefit Charleston Restaurant Association.

I think Charleston is beautiful, but my visits have been in March and April.

A young (20ish) Chinese friend visited for the first time over the Christmas/New Year time and was not very impressed. She said, "it must be nicer in the Spring."

So, it might depend on what you expect to do and see.
