Charleston or Savannah

We're doing a fall driving trip through the SE in October. Would like to stay in one of these 2 cities for a couple of days and tour the area (seems that they are relatively close together). Which would you chose? B&B recommendations--in the mid/upper range?

Would definitly choose Charleston over Savannah. Much more to see in my opinion. Just returned from our Spring Break trip there (3 teachers) and all of us really enjoyed touring the city. Make sure you take a carriage ride. We stayed at the DoubleTree Guest Suites and would recommend them to anyone. Fantastic location and nice hotel. Enjoy your stay.

I live in Charleston and have gone to Savannah several times. I would definitely recommend Charleston over Savannah. Savannah is nice, don't get me wrong, but there's so much more to see and do in Charleston.

As for accomodations, a few that I'd suggest are the Ansonborough Inn, Mills House, Market Pavillion.

There are so many things to do in Charleston, compared to Savannah - my opinion!

And one more for Charleston--better food, more sights, just better all around.

This is a time-honored "which?" question here, and for balance, I'll recommend Savannah. I find it more interesting, less manicured than Charleston, better for those with a taste for a certain gracious funkiness. Has awareness of its history back to Colonial/Federal era (less Civil-War obsessed than Charleston), can be spectacularly pretty even out of the tourist areas, esp. if you like slightly romantic, slightly spooky Spanish moss. There's even a perceptible hint of its historic links to the Caribbean (piracy, voodoo). Do some homework on it (and maybe read or see 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil') to make your stay even better.

(But frankly, you could probably do a day in each place if you didn't want to choose.)

I would spend the night in each because they are both outstanding cities.

I also recommend the Doubletree in Charleston and the Hyatt in Savannah.

Thanks for the input. "Midnight...." was one of the reasons I was leaning toward Savannah, but now.... Maybe a coin toss. I'm sure both will be fun.

I am on my way to both Charleston and Savannah in early May and was told by locals that I should go to Savannah first because if I go to Charleston first, when I get to Savannah, I will want to go back to Charleston. I was surprised at how expensive the hotels were, but decided not to stay at a B&B. I am looking forward to visiting both places and did book my trip so that I visit Charleston after Savannah. I am only staying 1 day in each place. I am staying at the Pavilion Hotel in Charleston and the Hyatt Regency in Savannah.

I would try really hard to devote more of my trip to Charleston and Savannah. It would be great if you had at least two days in each. They are both just great..... I love BOTH!!! I can never choose a favorite, as both have such unique charms.... I also like the Hyatt riverfront in Savannah, and the Hampton Inn in the historic district is great in Charleston (a great value!)
