Charleston in late October
 

HI - I will be in Charleston for about 4 days, arriving early Fri 10/29 and leaving late afternoon on Monday 11/1. There will be 3 of use. We have a hotel booked in the historic district and and have a few restaurant recommendations (could always use more) but we have not booked a car. We were thinking we'd go to Savannah for a day trip but maybe that's too much? Does anyone have any Can't Miss recommendations. We do want to do a walking tour of the city, we are planning on a carriage ride and would like to go to a planation as well. Also - does any thing special happen on Halloween? I always get great info from the forum so I'm hoping y'all come through again! Thanks so much.

You'll not even have sufficient time to see Chaleston so I'd not waste a trip to Savannah. Lots of Charleston posts on here which should answer most any question.

It is possible to see much of what Charleston has to offer in three full days. Agreed with SAnParis2 that you won't have time for Savannah as well -- that would easily eat up two days all by itself.

Charleston is very well covered on this board, and a search is highly recommended.

Halloween is a festive time to be in historic Charleston.

Restaurants and "ghost tours" will be active on Halloween. If you want a ghost tour, you should book in advance; however, I don't think that a ghost tour is necessary to the mood. I love walking through the gas lit residential area South of Broad to see the decorations on the lovely old homes. Closer to the College of Charleston you will students out for the evening in creative costumes.

Go to Middleton Plantation and see the nearby Middleton Inn, IMO one of the finest pieces of contemporary architecture in SC.

Also, don't miss dining at McCrady's, just off Bay Street. Look at the generous review on Chuckeats. (Bring money.)

Just really enjoy Charleston. There is more than enough for that time. Lots and lots of restaurants in other threads here. Charleston is not far off NOLA in my credo of getting up from one meal and planning for my next. Good eats. Middleton Plantation is our favorite for a view of that life.

I can google things for people too, but that's not what the OP is asking. It's a beautiful city, and I agree with McCrady's recommendation. I also like SNOB, High Cotton, Fast and French, Il Cortile del Rey, Hominy Grill for breakfast and so many others. My friend kiawahvilla said it best.

I love Charleston and you will have a great time in 4 days. Go to the Vendue Inn roof top bar. You take an old elevator that holds about 5 to the top. Walk through Charleston Place Hotel. It is very pretty. Rent a bike - or your hotel may offer them free - and bike down by the Battery Park. You'll enjoy a real nice way to see the beautiful homes and waterway. A fun way to go down the little narrow streets too. I enjoyed Hanks seafood restaurant - can get expensive though. Have fun!
