Charleston in late May, any advice?
 

Me and my other half are planning a road trip to Charleston in late May but before the holiday. Would it be terribly hot and humid already by then?

So I've been trying to figure out how many nights to spend there, 2 maybe 3? I kinda like the Best Western King Charles Inn for the rates and believe the location would be good enough to see the historic area on foot.

I'm thinking any plantations could be seen on our way in or out of Charleston. We'll be coming from DE mostly likely down 95.... we have several days and open itinerary so not sure what else we want to see along the way to/from SC but thinking about a stop in VA somewhere. We've been to Savannah and it's one of my fav cities but not sure we want to drive that far south.

If you don't have a place to stay it may be too late. The Spoleto Festival is in late May and everything is probably booked. It won't become unbearable til July. The KCI gets great reviews and has free parking.

The plantations are not far out of town and 3 of them are close to each other but not really on your way into town. Not much on 95 (boring) unless you wast to stop in DC.

The last 10 days of May are very crowded in Charleston due to the Spoleto Festival. Restaurants are much busier. Parking is harder. You might consider making this a beach trip and coming into town during the day.

Check out Kiawah or Isle of Palms. Weather in May is perfect for the beach. Water temps in the high 70s.

We were thinking of coming the last week in May leaving before Memorial day weekend. I googled Spoleto Fest and it run's 2 weeks into June. We would be gone before the first day which is probably why there is tons of vacancy. Unfort 95 is the only direct way boring or not. Thanks for the info

Well, you can have a bit of nice highway by cutting over to Route 17 on I40 at Wilmington, NC level. Then just drive to Charleston more along the coast. You will find more fun places to perhaps stop and see. And the amount of time driving will not be appreciably more. Wilmington is about 3.5 hours total drive to Charleston, just to give a gauge.
