Charleston Ice Cream Recos

A close friend from Boston is meeting me in Charleston, SC for a few days. In our youth we spent a great deal of time in ice cream parlors in the Boston area. Where should I take her for an ice cream treat in Charleston?
Thanks!

If you are staying downtown there is Ben & Jerry's, a Haggen Daas (SP?~sorry) and a ice cream store in the back of a candy store where they make fudge etc... These are all located in the market area. There used to be a Swensen's that had a parlor feel to it but I am not sure if it is still there. Something tells me that they tore that building down in the last few years. Someone here will know though!

Any secret local places anyone knows about?

You want Gelateria Modica on George St., just off King. Lots of College of Charleston kids getting their gelato fix there. The pistachio is my favorite.

Thank you, Litespeed! Just exactly what I was hoping to find.

Sadly, we don't have to great little ice cream stands and parlors like Boston (one of the things I miss about living up there). Ye Olde Town is a locally family-owned chain with pretty good ice cream and food but they don't make their own ice cream like the ones in Boston. B&J and HD are around but you can find them anywhere. The B&J downtown and Isle of Palms are owned by a friend so I am a little partial to B&J :) The B&J downtown does have a little courtyard out back with a few tables under the shade of trees so that is nice. Also good is the previously recommended Gelateria Modica as well as Paolo's Gelateria on John Street --- next to Rue de Jean.

Enjoy your visit!!

p.s. Jetprincess -- I do so miss Swenson's!! The building is actually there but it is no longer an ice cream parlor...it's yet another chain retail store...ugh.

Modica is wonderful! If you are shopping on King St. it is in the ideal location to take a break and enjoy a cup of exceptionally good gelato. The flavors are imaginative and very deep. Thank you for the suggestion.
