Charleston Hotels and Guides
I'm going to Charleston with my mother in May. We'd like a place to stay that has at least 30 or more rooms and isn't over the top in romance. Has anyone stayed at the French Quarter Inn? Also, does anyone have any guides or tours they enjoyed? Thanks everyone!

We have loved the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown. It is right on the river and has a lovely view of the marina. It's not your typical Courtyard. Make sure to ask for a riverview room.
The carriage rides are very nice, but I highly recommend to make your first stop the visitors center. It has a wealth of information.

I think the French Quarter Inn would be a nice place to stay, but the romance factor may be a bit much. It is a lovely hotel, though. The Market Pavilion hotel is also very nice. I have stayed there once before and it is beautiful, great amenities and very convenient for everything. If you're going to do a carriage tour, don't wait until too late in May because of the heat. It can be sweltering in late May.

A good place to stay is the Anchorage Inn - www.anchoragencharleston.com It is near the lovely Waterfront Park and harbor (a great stroll, benches, fountains, "front porch" swings) and many great restaurants (Magnolia's is one of my favorites). And the rate for Charleston is quite reasonable. Less of a romantic place than many of the other small Inns but with a lot of character. Great complimentary breakfast and wine and cheese in the afternoon. If your mother loves gardens then Magnolia Gardens is beautiful and so is Middleton Place Gardens (they have a great restaurant for lunch). Any of the carriage tours are good - especially as orientation if this is your first trip.

There is a guide in Charleston--Sara Ragsdale--who gives wonderful tours. I cannot find her e-mail address but I think if you contacted the visitors bureau they could put you in touch. Reserve before you go.

Sara Ragsdale is fabulous! We were there in November with my mom and we did a walking tour with her as well as a private tour of the Calhoun Mansion. She is able to show you parts of the mansion that are not open to the public and it was great. her email is [email protected]

You should also take the ferry to Fort Sumter which is quite interesting.
We stayed at the Vendue Inn which was lovely and in a good location. They have a very nice breakfast buffet, wine and cheese evry afternoon and milk and cookies at night.

Have fun! Charleston is a wonderful cty.

I second the Vendue Inn. We have been their twice. Lovely rooms. Beautiful bathrooms. Wonderful service. You have the feeling of a small hotel. Close to everything! You will really enjoy it their. Take care, Kris
