My wife and I are celbrating a surpise 1st anniversary in Charleston May 29 - 31. We are staying at the John Rutledge House, plan to eat at Magnolias, see Kiawah Island and Middleton Place plantation. Is there a more romantic restaurant or location we should see?

Any advice is most appreciated.

Congratulations! You picked a great place -- Charleston is lovely. I stayed at the Rutledge House once and did like it. I recommend taking a horse and buggy tour of the city which goes up to the battery and all over the historic district. The restaurant I strongly recommend is 82 Queen which is delicious and very special. Their shrimp and grits are to die for. I haven't been to Magnolia's so can't say whether it's "more romantic," but I think it would be hard to top. A bit more casual place, which might be good for lunch, is Poogan's Porch -- they had good she-crab soup as I recall. This was a couple of years ago. Have a great time.

Magnolia's is one of my favorites in the area (if not my favorite). Food is outstanding, service impeccable and the environment is modern, however, a bit noisy. 82 Queen is another great selection. It's an older establishment with a lovely courtyard. May have more of the romance you seek. Either is a great choice - you can't go wrong. Congratulations.

A short drive outside of Charleston is a place called Summerfields, an old tea plantation. Lunch was expensive (about $35/for two) but I thought it was well worth it. Excellent and elegant service and lovely place. Chairs were big cushy wicker on casters. It all seemed like a private, hidden world. I thought it was closed when we first arrived...because they have valet parking service. But someone was soon hurrying up to the car "to take care of it" for us.
We got directions at the car rental desk at the airport. I also recommend the carriage tour. It was lovely and very interesting. I would also recommend walking out on the pier in the historic market district and sitting in one of the swinging benches and just enjoy the view.

Oh I'm so jealous. I think Charleston is one of the most romantic places on earth. Middleton Plantation is lovely. The most romantic thing to do is the walk along the battery. I have some

You should definitely try to eat at Slightly North of Broad. It is one of Charleston's best restaurants and is a more intimate and romantic setting than Magnolia's. Congratulations and have a wonderful time!
