Charleston & Savannah Notes

We just returned from a great vacation which included Asheville, N.C., Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Georgia. Here are a few, very opinionated, observations.

The Biltmore (Asheville) was great. So too was the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad train trip out of Bryson City.

Staying at a quaint (i.e. high priced) B&B or inn in the historic district of Charleston is highly overrated. This is particularly true since much of what's great about the area is outside of the city.

This includes Middleton Plantation and Drayton Hall. Middleton was absolutely beautiful, and the tour of Drayton was extremely informative and interesting. It does not include Boone Plantation: everyone we encountered at Boone agreed that it is a shameful ripoff.

Staying at a quaint B&B or inn in Savannah is worth every penny. Savannah is for strolling, and the historic district is simple wonderful. Walk everywhere, and make sure that you eat lunch at Mrs. Wilke's. She's quite a lady!

It was a great 2500 mile raod trip!
Hi Jay - Where did you stay in Charleston?

Jay Frank Apr 12th, 1999 04:52 PM

Debbie:

We spent the first night at the Ashley Inn, followed by two nights at a Quality Suites in North Charleston. Both were very nice in their own way, but the latter was half the cost, twice the room, and very convenient to everything we wished to see.
going to Charleston in June. What do you recommend seeing and avoiding? it is the last weekend of Spoleto. 6 of us are all staying on Wentworth Street, north of Broad St. in a residential area, (or so I am told)at the Villa de la Fontaine. any suggestions are welcome including restaurants and sites. thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Jay - Thanks for the info. We are planning a Charleston visit in mid-August, and was looking into staying at The Ashley Inn. Would you recommend this as a B&B? How were the breakfasts? Is it considered IN the Historic District or on the outskirts? When we don't stay in B&B's, our alternative is usually a Courtyard by Marriott. If anyone has stayed here, is this within walking distance of the Historic District?

Jay-what restaurants would you recommend?
