Charleston and Savannah in December
 

Hi:

We trying to plan a trip in early or mid-December and are thinking of Charleston and Savannah. We are two adults, no kids and have been to both cities in the spring several years ago, but it was cold and rainy. We will split 8 days between the two cities.

I've done some research and it looks like the weather would typically be in the 50-60 degrees and not too rainy. Is this typical weather in December?

Does anyone have any must see suggestions? We are interested in photography, especially landscapes, nature and architecture.

We are also interested in the coastal area, especially Cumberland Island, for scenery and nature, not swimming.

It could be 70 and short sleeve weather or below freezing. It is rare for us to have a whole week of poor weather so as long as you are flexible and plan outside activities according to the forecast you will be fine.

palmettoprincess is right. It can get chilly but the sun usually warms things up during the day. I think it's a great time to visit. Charleston is beautiful during the holidays.

Cumberland Island has a few places to stay overnight. Greyfield Inn is the most famous. There is at least one cottage to rent in private hands. In-laws stayed there one Xmas holiday season and unusually cold weather and a very sick child made the stay beyond miserable, but that was circumstances beyond anyone's control. Another option off the coast is Sapelo Island which was owned at one time by RJ Reynolds. It is between St. Catherine's Sound and the Altamaha River Delta and has daily ferry service. It is state owned with about 400 acres in private hands in the Hog Hammock area. A few weeks ago, friends stayed at some new rentals "bird houses" and had a ball. Is it possible to visit to Cumberland Island as a day trip from Savannah? We are interested in seeing the wild horses.

I do not know the current "ins" and "outs" of visiting Cumberland Island. I suggest you check out that before committing. It's a huge island, over 20 miles long and getting around can be an issue. A lot has been in local news recently about controversial allowance of motorized tours on island. I don't know current status. Check out rules and regs on National Seashore site. A day trip can be done, but involves 2 hour drive each way from Savannah with ferry schedule deadlines. Ferry schedule: http://www.stmaryswelcome.com/cumberlandferry.html Ferry terminus is at St. Mary's and is a 2 hour drive, 113 miles from downtown Savannah, mostly on I95. Fernandina, Florida, just across the state line is an option to stay overnight the night before visiting Cumberland. It's an old former fishing village with nice shops and restaurants.
