Charleston and Savannah
Will be in Charleston and Savannah in early December. Anyone have a favorite bed and breakfast inn or restaurant they would like to share? Any tips as to sights to see there or surrounding areas. Will also be in Hilton Head for 2 nights. Thanks for your help.

While in Charleston, don't miss going to the Magnolia Plantation. We were there in April, so I don't know what it's like in Dec, but I imagine the camellias will be blooming. The Charleston historical district is also beautiful. |

Now I know why Sherman didn't burn Savannah. It is
BEAUTIFUL! Check out the Riverfront, Tybee Island, and the architect of that city! AWESOME! |
Hi, Honey...I'm at another computer now...I emailed you earlier and mentioned shopping at Savannah Mall and Chatham Plaza...should have said Savannah Mall and Oglethorpe Mall!

Savannah is a beautiful city. I know it well. It
was designed in squares. Take the auto tour that is marked. A historic & romatic place to stay is the Inn at 1790. Some rooms have fireplaces & huge sky- lights. Three great restaurants are: The Pirate House (very popular & historic); Elizabeth's on 37th, classy, gourmet, written up in magazines); Mrs. Wilkes Boardinghouse Restaurant ( downhome southern cooking, very popular, wonderful). There is a good info center in the old rennovated train depot just on the outskirts of the square. Good place start. If you like antiquing, lots of great place to hunt. Have a great visit! Susan |
A good lunch (even dinner) place is Hymans which is next door to the Omni hotel on Meeting St. If it is warm, got to Vendue Inn on Vendue Range (across from Southend Brewery on East Bay around the corner from the market). Walk in and take the elevator to the top floor. There is a rooftop bar and you can see the city. Ask a local(above the age of 30) and tell them what you want to eat and how much you want to spend--they will direct you. Have fun---was there 2 weeks ago and use to live there.

The best restaurant in Savannah is Johnny Harris on East Victory Drive which is about ten minutes from downtown Savannah and away from the usual tourist traps. The author of Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil said it is his favorite in Savannah (John Berendt).

Elizabeth's on 37th and Ms.Wilkes'Boardinghousehave already been mentioned, but if you're in the mood for the world's best burger and other southern-fried delights, go to the Crystal Palace, on "the other side of the tracks." It's a greasy-spoon dive and a real experience.
While in Hilton Head, you can't go wrong at Charlie's L'Etoile Verte (Green Star), a fantastic country French restaurant on the main highway (278) very near the entrance to Palmetto Dunes Resort. We've been there twice and it is outstanding. Enjoy. |
Crystal palace is fun and good food in Savannah. Compared to New Orleans, I thought the food wasn't great, at least not in the Pink House where we ate. The Ballastone Inn is a nice B and B, just make sure you are not in the room right off the lobby, it's too noisy. Tybee Isalnd is worth the visit, si is the Bonaventure Cemetery. |
