Charleston & beach hotels
We are looking into a late spring trip to Charleston & the beach around there for a few days each. I would appreciate a few hotel recommendations & where in Charleston. Husband would want to see the USS Yorktown & I would like a walking tour, so Mt Pleasant or downtown? Price up to $350/night. Like a restaurant in hotel by not critical. Pool would be an extra.
Also, for the beach, is Kiawah Island the best option or should we drive to Hilton Head. Prefer a resort than a condo. Don’t golf, just relax by pool or beach. |
Oh, stay in Charleston--historic district should be possible with that budget. And there is also Wild Dunes for the beach. Hilton Head is a "planned development by the sea" with zero ambience/soul. So many better beaches.

Charleston exudes Old South atmosphere with a Gullah culture flare. Its historic homes dating from the early 1800s and late 1700s line brick streets and are surrounded by lush foliage. The Historic District has over 3,600 historic structures including Powder Magazine (1713), Charleston Museum (1773), Old Exchange (1771), Pink House (1688) and the Old Slave Mart (1859). If you can afford it, stay at an historic inn in the historic district such as the John Rutledge House Inn (1763) or Planters Inn (1844).

I also would recommend staying in the historic district. We've enjoyed our stays at the King Charles Inn - it was centrally located so that it was easy walking around, but still be able to come back to our room to freshen up. There are others in the historical area that would fit that description.I would recommend taking one of the horse-drawn carriage rides before striking out on your own; it helped show the directions of the streets, with many helpful suggestions from the guides. If you're interested in the Yorktown, perhaps an additional visit to nearby Ft. Sumter would be a good historical add-on as well as the Civil War era submarine that was salvaged. There are also a large number of historic homes, cemeteries, tours (even evening ghost tours) - so much to do, so little time!
