Charleston
 

Possibly will visit charleston with family (6-7 people) this June. There will be 5 adults and 2 kids. We are thinking of either th e historic area or beach area. Possibly the beach is better with kids. What would be a good area..Folley, Palm Island, Kiwah etc?

If you like the beach and can do a Saturday to Saturday rental, I'd stay in a nice house at the beach. I'm partial to Isle of Palms or Sullivan's, though there are fewer rentals on Sullivan's. Folly would be my 3rd choice, but it can be cheaper if that's an issue. To me, Kiawah is too far to be a good base for enjoying Charleston.

That is good info because we do want to be close to Charleston as well. Any other feedback is always welcome.

I agree with Brian. Renting a house on one of the nearby islands is a great idea. That way you can enjoy the sites in downtown Charleston in the mornings while it's relatively cool and spend the afternoons at the beach, where the breezes make the summer heat more tolerable. Although I enjoy the slightly slower pace of Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms is very nice and has a much better selection of rental properties. We generally rent through Island Realty and have never been disappointed, but if you Google or go to VRBO, you can find lots of rentals.

How old are the kids? It might be harder to keep younger kids entertained for more than a couple of days in Charleston - especially if it's a hot week in June - compared to the beach. The Riverdogs schedule should be in full swing; fun times for baseball fans!

I'm going to give a vote for Kiawah. I've been visiting Kiawah since I was a kid and continue to visit whenever possible with my DH and DS. The drive into Charleston has always seemed 'doable' to me - but we usually only go into town a couple of times during a week. We have used every rental company that serves Kiawah and I know lots of people have good luck with VRBO.

As a Charlestonian, I'd vote to stay on Sullivan's Island or Isle of Palms. Kiawah is too far from Charleston. A pretty drive, but it gets old after a couple of trips. Folly Beach is fun, but more hippiesh. There's more to do on the Mt. Pleasant side of the peninsula. Lots to see and do in Charleston. Great food, too! Enjoy.

Another vote for Isle of Palms.They have a resort, a couple of hotels and houses that rent by the week. Sullian's is mostly year round residents and long term renters. My favorite restaurant is the Boathouse between I of P and Sullivans. During the tide changes you can watch dolphins feast on schools of fish.

If you have the money stay at Wild Dunes.
