Changing reservations on Amtrak
I can't seem to open the page for the Amtrak website. Can someone tell me if there is a charge for changing a reservation? For a round-trip ticket, can you make a change after you arrive at your destination -- say, if you decide you want to stay longer?

your best bet would be to call 800-USA-RAIL
Im not sure if there website can help you with this question anyway |
I've never had problems (at a station) changing Amtrak reservations, with the exception of "no change" reservations like "Rail-Sale" and the no-longer offered 50%-off Veterans' Advantage.
Some trips will require fees, especially rooms, but I've not found anything at the Amtrak website for changing nor cancelling reservations. Seldom is Amtrak r/t cheaper than 2 one-way trips -- easier to cancel part of a trip if booked w/ each leg a separate trip. |
RB, that's a great idea - to book 2 separate trips, why couldn't I think of it?? In case I need to go a day later or come back a day earlier.

I especially do that when traveling on Southwest Airlines, and the discount fares are good on one-way or r/t. There's not question w/ SW ... if you change any part of the itinerary, the whole thing gets cancelled, and you must rebook at current rates. At least I can get 1/2 the trip at the bargain rate, even if I must pay more for the return. Of course on most deals it's ONLY for round trip, so one must make sure plans won't be changing or forfeit the big $$.

Oh, darn, I could've used that tip when I knew my departure date, but not the return date! I had to wait so I paid a bit more... Never even thought of buying a one-way with all those security talks. I will certainly remember next time! Thanks, RB!
