Teresazona, I think 15 days away is a good amount. You shouldn't be too worried. Hopefully in two weeks they can get some sunshine and get the work done that needs to be done.

Can anybody tell me how things are on Maui? We are supposed to be going there on April 2nd. A week later we are going to Kauai. Hopefully by then it will be more dry and cleaned up. I hope we donn't have to change our plans.

We were supposed to go to the Kauai Marriott on March 26th and I have changed our plans to go to the Renaissance Wailea instead on Maui. (I still can't believe I found a room at the last minute like this). Hawaiian airlines is rerouting passengers to other islands at no charge if your plans were now - March 31st.

I've been to Maui before and was really excited about seeing Kauai, but not under these conditions. Maybe next year!

How are things on Maui? Heh, we could use some rain. Water levels are low! We've not had any of the rain from this system. But it has disrupted our winds, so it has been really muggy and hot. We've had some cloudy days, but at least here in Kihei I have seen the sun every day this past week ast some point during the day.

I'm staying at the Marriott in Lihue starting April 10th, but looking at the pictures from the newspaper is making me doubtful about travelling to Kauai this spring. If the ocean is brown from all the runoff, it sure would be a lot of money spent wasted on a less than ideal vacation. Anyone else feel this way?

I saw a report from someone who was at the Lihue Marriott today. She said the beach is toally closed and there are 10 bulldozers trying to reconstruct the lawn and beach area. Another report said all the south shore beaches were filled with debris and contaminated.
There is mud, dirty water, and bad smells everywhere. My thoughts are with the hard working crews who are trying so hard to cope with the problems. I'm sure the island will need the income that the tourists bring, but perhaps right now visitors might just add more stress.

Hawaiian Island Braces for More Heavy Rain

HONOLULU - Hawaiian officials carefully monitored high-risk reservoirs for another possible break as forecasters predicted several more days of heavy rain for an island where a dam burst last week, killing up to seven people.

A flash flood warning was in effect and state officials said Saturday they were sending further support to Kauai, where the Kaloko Reservoir dam broke Tuesday and sent a flood of surging water that swept away houses. The bodies of three victims have been found, four remain missing.

"The poor folks on Kauai - it's happening again," said Maj. Gen. Robert Lee, the state's adjutant general.

Forecasters predict the rains will continue to fall through at least Wednesday, Lee said.

Most of the water has been pumped out of the Morita Reservoir, one of 53 on the island, which is now only a foot deep, Lee said.

Four high-risk reservoirs will be watched by radio-controlled water level monitoring devices capable of beaming information to a satellite, said Peter Young, who heads the state's Department of Land and Natural Resources. An additional system will use a laser light to monitor any movement at the dams.

In Honolulu, Gov. Linda Lingle extended Hawaii's state of emergency through March 26 to expedite evacuations and disaster relief.

Although "they" always say that beautiful sunrises and sunsets require pollutants in the air -- and lord knows, the recent Kaua`i rains have washed our skies quite well -- last night's sunset was the most awesome I've ever seen. It was as if the sky was on fire.

But then northshore Kaua`i had a fierce series of thunderstorms overnight, seemingly forming right over na pali -- but I can see blue skies near na pali now (yay!). And the weather forecast for today has gone from "100% chance of rain" (ack!!) to just "40% chance" for the balance of the day. Wu-huuuuuu (for now, at least).

We and our neighbors have cabin-fever, so are going to the Princeville Hotel this afternoon for a performance by a visiting string trio, and high tea.

If you are going to be staying at the Lihue Marriott soon you should call them and make sure their beautiful pool has been drained of all the mud! It looked like a giant pool of chocolate milk last week!

Here 2day gone 2Maui, is that right no rain? I thought I read that Hana was having mud slides. I thought all the islands were getting rain but Kauai was getting most because it gets hit first.

Anyone know about the big island? I'm thinking about switching over to B.I. or Maui if the weather's ok. Glad not everyone is getting slammed.

We just returned from Kauai. We are there every month as we hope to call it home one day soon. We were there from the 9th to 20th of March. On the 19th we had beautiful sunshine and even managed to enjoy the beach. Do not change your plans. The highway situation is not perfect but no reason to not go. There was tremendous damage from the water but it is an island of beauty you should not miss. And it is going to need all revenues possible to fix the latest damage. Go and enjoy and learn from your time there. Mahalo.
