Century 21 mall or Canal St.?
Hi:
We're 3 moms with 4 teens who'll be in NYC for 4 days in July. A "little shopping" is required ad a wondering whether Canal St. or Century 21 Mall is better for knock off bargains and generally good deals. |
Century 21 is a great place to shop!

Century 21 is a great place but keep two things in mind. It isn't cheap and it is always packed. You have to spend time there digging. Avoid Saturdays if possible. With the exception of the shops in Chinatown, I think the stuff they sell on Canal Street is crap. |
I do not see the appeal of Century 21. I made my first trip there last week and was disappointed. As GoTravel said, it isn't cheap - I was told and had read about the 'many bargains' there but I didn't see any. Canal Street is okay for purses and that is about it - unless the teens have never been to a Chinatown shopping district. Perhaps some locals can reply with ideas on good shopping !

Century 21 is NOT a mall but a discount dept store. It doesn't sell "knock offs" it sells designer and designer type clothes at discounted (but sometimes still expensive) prices. You have to be a serious shopper and get there early. It's not an experience everyone enjoys.
The stuff on Canal St. is mostly handbags/accessories. You don't say whether your teens are male or female, but H & M is a favorite store of most teens (and lots of Moms) for trendy clothes at good prices. Other discount stores that Moms and female teens like are Daffy's, Loehmann's and TJ Maxx. |
I vote for Canal St. More variety. More designer knock-offs. More " NY atmosphere." I bought some really cute purses there three years ago and then two years ago and I'm still using them all. Gets lots of compliments on them, too.

Keep in mind the knock offs are no longer really knock offs as the police have cracked down on the vendors. |
